This album would beat most other artists. I would give it to Dylan based on Highway 61 Revisited which has far more impact then Astral Weeks. Indeed, not sure Astral Weeks would be possible without Dylan. Madame George wouldn't exist without Desolation Row.

... for some reason, it's always The Beatles. I love how they come up even in a Van Morrison vs. Dylan thread 🤣

I prefer Astral Weeks to anything by Dylan (and indeed to pretty much almost every album I've ever heard) but like I wouldn't say that Dylan's 60's work is an obvious thing to compare Astral Weeks with. Musically, Astral is softer, more freeform, and very informed by jazz. Dylan's meanwhile is more conventional, with a more obvious rock influence. Lyrically too, Van is more about the emotional impact of the words, whereas Dylan focuses much more on narrative, and even when he goes for more abstract lyrical structures they still have a poetic quality to them.
I don't think the Beatles are comparable to Morrison/Dylan - the music has always been a bit contrived in my opinion, especially Sgt. Pepper's. Morrison recently called The Beatles "peripheral" to musicians in the 60's and that's how I've always thought of The Beatles. Influential and understandably successful in popular music, but peripheral to what songwriters like Morrison/Dylan and their music simply wasn't as good.

I'll approach this subject like this: In the US, Astral Weeks only reached gold while both Bob Dylan and The Beatles have platinum albums - The Beatles even has some diamond albums. So that right there says that the masses wouldn't say that Astral Weeks is better than any album in either Bob Dylan's or The Beatles' discographies. Now, as far as me, these artists aren't really what I would normally listen to, but I would turn on a Bob Dylan or Beatles' record before Astral Weeks.

I think Astral Weeks is fantastic but there are three or four Dylan records that continually blow my mind. Not saying in fact they are better than Astral Weeks but I go back to them much more often.

Blood on the Tracks is better than Astral Weeks, if only because I find it more relatable. Musically Astral Weeks probably wins but it doesn't have Idiot Wind or Tangled Up in Blue. Or Simple Twist of Fate. Or Buckets of Rain. Or...

I'd probably take Astral Weeks over any other Dylan album though, except maaaaaybe Bringing It All Back Home.

He's underrated in total impact and importance in music history, where The Beatles are overrated.

Morrison had a significant impact on rock music and notably Jim Morrison of The Doors - who emulated his performing and singing style from Them, after touring together. Many people would list Springsteen as a more influential artist than Morrison, who likewise emulated his songwriting style and hired musicians from Astral Weeks.

Dylan is Morrison's peer and a great artist, but Morrison's best record and songwriting is still in a different category than Dylan's, in my opinion. And the extent of Morrison's influence is not accurately noted by many.

I still voted Astral Weeks. I'd prefer to listen to Astral Weeks, then Moondance, and then The Times Are A Changin' (my favorite Dylan album).

sure, but only because Dylan was still releasing music in the '80s and filled his discography with some truly abysmal records. i would take any Dylan album from the sixties over any Beatles record by a wide, wide margin.

And yeah, Van Morrison is incredibly popular. Underrated isn't really a word that comes to mind. If being less popular than Bob Dylan makes you underrated basically every artist, save maybe the Beatles, would be considered underrated.
