StreetSpirit wrote:

I think our '80s list turned out pretty good, just minorly disappointed with how high certain movies were. I didn't know there were only 18 users who participated. Thus the survey wasn't very encompassing, and wasn't all movie buffs, which makes the results interesting. But like badseed says, the small arthouse films just can't compete with the popularity of mainstream favorites.

badseed wrote:

As for 70s based on how IMDb friendly our top 10s are I'll go ahead and call it:

1. The Godfather
2. The Godfather Part II
3. Star Wars
4. Apocalypse Now

And truthfully I couldn't argue. Coppola is never a name that comes up in my list of favorite directors but there's no doubt he owned the 70s and anyone who doesn't like The Godfather has some kind of genetic error. Hell I've currently got them as my top 2 and I can't find much reason to change that before submitting my list.

Coppola is one my favorite directors. Apart from the Godfathers and Apocalypse Now, he has directed other good movies. Don't forget The Conversation, Coppola's other film in the '70s. It may not be a masterpiece like his other three '70s films, but it's still pretty damn good and can hopefully make the list.

Oh I definitely haven't forgotten The Conversation, but outside those four 70s movies he hasn't done much for me. A couple alright movies nothing noteworthy. I enjoy a few to an extent but unlike Scorsese or Spielberg for example he never managed to come close to what he did early on.

I love Annie Hall (and several Woody Allen movies for that matter) but yeah based on the '80s list, I don't see it coming in at #1. No Stardust Memories nor Purple Rose of Cairo, and the three Woody movies that did make it were all in the lower half.

Nevertheless, the '70s were an awesome decade for movies. And I'm sure our survey will reflect that. The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane, Death Wish, Wake in Fright, Midnight Express, etc. Get watchin folks.

Definitely down for Stalker as a surprise #1 (I have it listed at #3 behind the Godfather on my chart as of right now and am considering it for higher placement) but assuming a lot of the charts you get are mainstream heavy I don't think it will make many lists. And there's no way Godfather Part 1 misses the top 10 unless someone recruits a bunch of people from the Criterion Collection forums to vote in this. Annie Hall? Yeah right. Crimes and Misdemeanors and Hannah and Her Sisters didn't even make the top 50 of the 80s and most people who are Woody Allen fans at all are HUGE Woody Allen fans. As for House it'll be one of those "glad to see this made it" entries between 70 and 100.

Knowing BEA, I highly doubt this will happen. I actually think we'll rank Part II higher, cracking in our top 10, but the original somewhere in the 11-20 range.

I have an odd feeling that Annie Hall will actually be our #1. That or Stalker.

I think the problem is there's been little talk about the actual films involved and more so going after the credibility and perceived shortcomings in how the voters selected the films and how it reflects in the final result. I see a lot of talk about why Empire got voted for or what factors made them "err in that decision", but little about the actual film itself.

I donno, yes I voted for The Empire Strikes Back, pretty high up, I think it's by far the best film of the Star Wars series in terms of story, character and atmosphere WELL BEYOND just how it affects an overall film canon or nostalgia value or whatever, and just really a fantastic film on it's own (more so than it's rather cheesy, messy sequel), even as it's been a good 17 years or so since I got over my Star Wars phase. I definitely don't think it was the best movies of the 80s, but like any list there's going to be disagreement on what makes it to the top, so I don't see it's number one ranking as a travesty or something "we" as a whole should be scolded for.

Maybe after we bust out the decades back to the 20s we could have an arthouse film poll, or a best ever films to no make the decade lists poll. I consider myself a movie buff through and through but there's no way you can expect some little independent Pakistani surrealist film nobody's ever seen to make a list like this no matter how good it is, especially on a website where the primary area of expertise of the users is music and most of us don't really know much about that either.

I found the list pretty decent. Most of my top films did well. There were a few I feel bad for not including, and a few I haven't even heard of. Admittedly I haven't seen any of Tarkovsky's 80s films and I consider him one my 1B to Ingmar Bergman's 1A so I ought to look into seeing those soon.

Didn't at all criticize your opinion or that of anyone else. You directly attacked my opinion and hated on the film. Not really sure who the insecure one is.

Yeah I thought this was just a fun poll about voting for what we like rather than focusing on what we didn't vote for and what we don't like. I mean yes a film that has been widely seen by a broad swath of voters has the best chance to do well, and really it's just the luck of where it's numbered on a list and how many times it shows up on the overall number of lists submitted determining how well it actually does. This isn't exactly the definitive "Empire is unarguably the greatest film of the 80s!" statement, nor does anybody have to defend an entire voting collective just because that certain film is deemed unworthy. It was a fun poll, we all had a chance to have our say, so what's the big deal overall? If this all gets repeated next time around because of another #1 film not deemed worthy enough, or for some reason we keep talking about the merits of Shrek 2, this isn't going to be much fun anymore.
I'm expressing my opinion that I dislike the #1 on our list. Just because people have this absurd rationalization process for trying to separate disliking something and thinking it's not good, I don't bother. I don't have an "objective" view of The Empire Strikes Back being good or bad, and neither do you. We both have subjective positions. But you're so insecure in yours that you feel the need to project posturing onto me. Stop doing that. It happens constantly.

Due to the backlash, I feel like I should point out that Empire Strikes Back appeared on 12 of the lists submitted, whereas Brazil, Raging Bull, Blade Runner, Back To The Future and The Shining appeared on 13. It just happened to be that The Empire Strikes Back seemed to always be very high up on lists.

There were 18 lists submitted (for point of reference), meaning only 6 people (including myself) didn't have it on their list. So I'd say that the majority of people participating would be quite glad to see it so high up.

I'm impartial to the matter because I haven't seen it, but I'm kinda surprised with the backlash here. Especially considering it's also iMDb's #1 film of the 80's as well.

And unrelated, but I'm surprised with how people didn't react to the fact that Gandhi, Rain Man and The Little Mermaid not making the cut.
