Let's see...

-- Must we keep all of our labels? Surely some outlive their value in bed. --

-- I seek deeper truths through music. I want this to be the end, but they are always pit stops in bed. --

-- Whether cutting trees or cutting cheese, we must always keep our eyes on the greater good in bed. --
Yes that can work.

It's kind of like how Punk's origins are more location based. When you listen to NY Punk bands like Suicide, Television, Talking Heads, Blondie, James Chance, Patti Smith, The Ramones, etc they don't really have a universal sound. They were or less just connected by the location, time, friendships and ideology. And if location wasn't a major factor then bands like Devo and Pere Ubu would find themselves more connected to it.

This I can very much so agree with... before I was thinking of Genre of types of music, but ideology of music is a REALLY good point.

There's certainly musical similarities between Mudhoney, Nirvana, Soundgarden, etc but Grunge had just as much or more to do with the fact that they were part of a scene that developed in Seattle. The fact that they also dressed and looked a certain way also made it easier for people to lump them together.

Yup. And I guess that's helpful for some people. I mean I certainly agree it helps people discuss a very specific period of time in music history... but as previously stated the genre itself is kind of unclear. Have fun with that one Genre Nazis kinda thing.

Yeah, a lot of sub genres of music are more about a time and place than a specific sound. There's certainly musical similarities between Mudhoney, Nirvana, Soundgarden, etc but Grunge had just as much or more to do with the fact that they were part of a scene that developed in Seattle. The fact that they also dressed and looked a certain way also made it easier for people to lump them together.

RockyRaccoon wrote:

What do you mean?

Well, I kinda feel like it was a term coined by music journalists and then capitalized by record companies, and was not that the bands themselves pushing for a new genre. I think Nirvana referred to themselves as a punk band for example. I mean Nirvana quotes punk rock, Beatles, Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin as direct music influences all the time... they were just your standard rock band and the Grunge genre, in my opinion is totally made up (meaning it has no real connection to the band other than they are from Seattle).

Another example of this is I feel Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana have a lot of musical similarities, yet they aren't in the same sub-genre... Nirvana and Soundgarden are in the same sub-genre and I feel they sound nothing alike... Soundgarden being more classic rock and Nirvana being more punk rock.

A lot of what they play sounds just like music from times past that wasn't called grunge... yet Nirvana is grunge.

So... I stopped and looked up grunge and found that it is a sub-genre of Alternative rock... I get SOOO lost on subgenres to the point that I don't even agree they should exist, but that's just me. I get that is like un-sacred conversation in a forum like this, so no need to refute it. It's just my opinion.

"Grunge (sometimes referred to as the Seattle sound) is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged during the mid-1980s in the American state of Washington, particularly in Seattle." wiki article on grunge

I guess it's like the genre motown... it's like named after a record company and location... it's totally made up and isn't a real new music genre.

By new music genre I mean it in the definition of:
A music genre is a conventional category that identifies some pieces of music as belonging to a shared tradition or set of conventions.[1] It is to be distinguished from musical form and musical style, although in practice these terms are sometimes used interchangeably.

Meaning the form/style of grunge really isn't that much different. They are a rock band and their genre of grunge is only like 30% helpful, in my opinion.

Sub-genre's just elude me altogether... I truly don't understand their function in regards to appreciating/understanding music.

For me Genre is like looking at the earth from 10k feet and you can tell something is a jungle or desert, plain or mountain, coast or ocean... that's the extent of their helpfulness. After that, the subgenre doesn't really let me know anything beyond say the Gobi desert or Indian ocean. Whether I like the Mojave or Sahara desert has nothing to do with them being deserts if that makes any sense whatsoever... 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
