Funk explodes the bass guitar.

Here's some of my favorite funk:

Cool documentary with Larry Graham (supposed funk slap style creator)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3e7EF7rRA9M

Then there's Sly and the Family Stone Greatest Hits if you are wanting to check out my most favorite funk:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDjnB_61k58&list=PLC24EE64F54D74DD8

And then of course Parliament:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tna-3J8F8nE

And I feel this is soul moving towards funk by Aretha:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wQT3YRk4ME

Then of course this from the Jackson 5 on Soul Train:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QW3oTE85Nk

I could be wrong, but I think that they completely took the bass guitar out of Metallica's And Justice For All. Has anyone else ever noticed that?
All Things Must Pass 🙁

As a punk rocker at heart, I have huge admiration for Kim Deal's work with Pixies, so I made up this little playlist of my fav Pixies' bass-driven songs. Enjoy if you want.

https://open.spotify.com/user/grzywa80/playlist/2wkFnHXI1iTtlIVttB4i8Z

It's interesting to see how her role in the band was gradually reduced. While bass was central in many of the early songs (Where Is My Mind being just the most obvious example), you will find it coated with extra guitar layers on Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde. "Searching for new sound" was just a part of the truth, I guess.

Sounds a bit stoner rock to me.

Stoner rock is notorious for playing in what's called dropped tuning. They'll play in a low C or something ridiculous.

Right, so I said " a bit" 😄 Sort of mental shortcut, I just heard something QOTSA-like in this track.

Has Primus been mentioned in this thread ?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7PlSUQiISY

Oh I was agreeing with you... by playing a baritone guitar, it is I think tuned to a low A instead of the higher E. Stoner rock totally does the same thing, but the whole band is super low tuned.

Primus needs to be in the thread. Sailing the Seas of Cheese is a very good album.

I'm not crazy about all their music, but I am for that album.

One band I got into because of their use of a baritone guitar is Thrice... I wasn't into their earlier punk pop sound, but everything thing since the Alchemy Index album wise was great music for me.

Playing a Fender Jaguar deluxe baritone guitar:

Link

Studio sound of same song (better quality):

Link

Another great song called Firebreather:

Link
The bari sax on Buena is some cool "bass" as well :). That track has always just been amazing to me. Thanks for sharing the list. I own Cure for Pain and liked listening to it a few times, but hadn't really gotten much further into them... I think this playlist might help me get more into them.

I had no idea that was bass... I guess he used a slide to get different sounds out of it... pretty damn cool.

He did, and it was a 2-string bass 😄
@seth, you may want to watch this interview with Sandman where he discusses a lot of technical aspects related to his bass playing.

Also very good point on Nite Klub... very good bass work there.

@seth, you may want to watch this interview with Sandman where he discusses a lot of technical aspects related to his bass playing.
Plus Morphine was a band without a guitar, which made him stand out as the absolute driving force behind their music.

For those who are interested, this is a little playlist of my favourite Morphine tracks. Bomb the bass !

1:51 -2:15 in Nite Klub is the bass top of the mountain. And, speaking of big solo moments, 1:00 -1:11 in Maxwell Murder by Rancid is pretty sick.
