From the List Odessey, although Begin Here has some nice songs on it.

How in the hell are you going to call Nas a one album wonder? Yes, Illmatic is his masterpiece. But he has other successful albums as well. That would include Stillmatic, God's Son, Hip Hop is Dead, and most recently, Life is Good. Calling Nas a one album wonder is kind of insulting
Can anyone explain to me the Smiths?

I feel they have compilation releases that are also original releases... like when I look at which album originally has "How Soon Is Now?"... it's a compilation album. Unless I suck at reading, it never was released on an "original" album.

The also have a lot of compilations... like double their original albums.

Was there just A LOT of B-Side type music... or did they just decide to release singles with stuff that didn't make the "studio album" or what?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Smiths_discography

Basiclly those comilations that were originally released while the band was till together are comps of singles (with their B-sides and alternate recordings of existing songs, such as Peel sessions. A lot of people, me included, regard the versions of these songs as better in a lot of cases than their other versions, an example being "What Difference Does It Make". Hatful of Follow, Louder Than Bombs, and The World Won't Listen are absolutely as essential as their regular albums, if not more.

Thanks!

So in this case, the compilations are just as important as their studio albums.

Basiclly those comilations that were originally released while the band was still together are comps of singles (with their B-sides) and alternate recordings of existing songs, such as Peel sessions. A lot of people, me included, regard the versions of these songs as better in a lot of cases than their other versions, an example being "What Difference Does It Make". Hatful of Follow, Louder Than Bombs, and The World Won't Listen are absolutely as essential as their regular albums, if not more.

I said this on the compilations thread, but I'll say it here again... most people don't realize the artist, unless a strictly independent release, doesn't have 100% free reign on how the album tracks are selected. The same corporate jackass who chooses the flow of a compilation is the same corporate jackass who decides which songs are the singles and sometimes as much of the flow of the original album. This of course depends on the situation... BUT IT HAPPENS.

But there are some AMAZING compilations that are ranked REALLY low on this site and I think that's sad. Some artists aren't good album makers... and that's perfectly fine that their best of collection is really their best collection of songs... and not their albums.

I think you'd be surprised at how many albums aren't carefully thought out and considered and made without any kind of "story" in mind. We'd better make another album while we have this break in touring...how many do we have laying around? 4? better get writing. Anyone got any scraps laying around we can build something out of?

The thought that a band or solo artist is going through an entire career telling a story would be the exception, not the rule. If you dislike compilations, that's your thing...they do serve a purpose, and if done well, can be really excellent collections of songs...which is what an album is...a collection of songs. I do hope you aren't one of those people who rate charts and deduct 3 stars because it has a compilation somewhere on it.

I mean there's an idea that artists always aim for cohesion, overarching musical theme, and generally consistency of style and content throughout the thing, but honestly I feel like it doesn't happen quite like that a lot of the time and really artists just end up throwing shit together as haphazardly as the worst compilations. Of course there are plenty of truly "whole" LPs that deserve to be hit with the "LP is cohesive statement" cliche, but I just don't think that cliche is at all universally applicable, and certainty not exclusively to LPs. I have 17 compilations on my chart and I will defend each and every one to the better end not just for the quality of the music contained therein but for the overarching cohesion and Grand Artistic Statement factor that again I believe trumps that of so many LPs...

Honestly I think many compilations have far more cohesion and "flow" that a great deal of traditional LPs. Not to mention the LP was only invented around the beginning of the rock music era, and being staunchly anti-comp can prevent you from accessing so many pre-LP gems, or cohesive collections of "singles" artists (Madonna's Immaculate Collection comp flows better than 90% of rock albums imo). Re: telling a story: who says the curator of a compilation doesn't have a sense of "story" when compiling? (if not even more-so than a rock auteur?) Remember compilations are more than just TO BE LOVED: THE BEST OF PAPA ROACH type bullshit
