cravings that would eventually drive me mad: lack of access to metal, jazz, anything too contemporary, literally every form of music native to a non-Western culture

i don't envy those in the difficult position of having to plan ahead for desert island strandings

5 copies of this on vinyl. The covers would be good kindling. The vinyl itself probably would reflect the sun well, so I'd use it for SOS type activities.

Symphony No. 9 in D Minor "Choral" - Ludwig van Beethoven (1824)
Symphony No. 9 in D Major - Gustav Mahler (1909)
Mass in B Minor - Johann Sebastian Bach (1749)
Requiem - Guisseppe Verdi (1874)
Symphony No. 15 in A Major - Dmitri Shostakovich (1971)

My preferred recordings are listed on my "Best Recorded Performances" list

-Wagner's Tristan and Isolde might get in there instead of Shostakovich's 15th
-Also Charles Mingus' Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

-Among so many albums it would be nearly impossible to go without, it would be very very hard not to take Beethoven's Complete Piano Sonatas (and I probably would over Shostakovich's 15th) if an artist's complete recordings of those could be considered "one" album. Perhaps Paul Lewis' cycle is the best overall, or Annie Fischer's, or one of Brendel's, or or...

Beethoven:
- the 9th symphony, because despite of having listened to it literally hundred of times on different versions both live and recorded it still has parts that make me shivers on all 4th movements. Prefered version of Karajan with the BPO.
- the last two string quartets, n15 and n16, one in minor key and the other in major one. All emotions covered. Can't go wrong with that one. Prefered version of the Alban Berg Quartet,.

JS Bach
- The Goldberg variations by Glenn Gould. The '55 version.

The Beatles
-Sgt. Pepper's , because I have yet to find an album as colourful and uplifting while at the same time deep as this one.

Horacio Guarany
- Por darme el gusto, argentinean folklore. The voice of a man singing from the heart.

Just seems like the perfect soundtrack to the whole "stuck on a desert island" theme. Also, when I eventually become crazy and paranoid I'll start trying to decode it. Always good to have a project to pass the time.

Something bursting with life, to snap me out of those depressive moods. I also never seem to get sick of this one, no matter how many times I've heard it.

Both a nostalgia choice (this album basically defined my teenage years) and also just a really good album. Diverse too.

4. Bass Communion - Bass Communion II

Ambient and pretty. Something to create an atmosphere rather than necessarily focus on. Just switch off my mind and just stare out at the ocean.

5. VHS Head - Persistence Of Vision

Always risky committing to recent discoveries, but I still can't get enough of this one. Also, I'll need something to dance to, and this one knocks that quota out of the park.

5 copies of the Merzbox and I'll use the 150 or so CD's to spell out "HELP" for any passing planes. Hopefully the glint doesn't get in their eyes and blind them causing them to crash.

Being that it is highly unlikely I would have anything to play them on (and even if I did having only 5 albums to listen to for god knows how long would be worse than having none) I'd probably bring an mp3 player with 16 gig memory card instead. And water.
