Anyway not so much a case of misunderstood lyrics as misunderstood meaning, but when I first heard the Human League's fantastic Being Boiled I thought it was about Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge, which would be very fitting for the darkness of the song. Turns out it's about bloody silk worms - absolute nonsense. Still a banger but fs Oakey.

I knew a girl who thought "Message in a Bottle" by The Police was about a French woman named Mrs. Junobateau. 😁

Also another friend thought CCR was singing "There's a bathroom on the right" in Bad Moon Rising.

In "Do I Wanna Know?" by Arctic Monkeys I always though he was saying "Spilling drinks on my city", but it was actually "Spilling drinks on my settee," which was a huge let down. Also I never had any idea of what he's saying in "R U Mine?". I just have my own idea of what the lyrics are and that's what I always sing. Here's my idea of the opening couple of lines:
"I'm up a bit on a string
Tracy Island, time traveling diamond
Put a chic heartache
They've come to find you, foreign soap every morning."
And here's the actual lyrics:
"I'm a puppet on a string
Tracy island, time-traveling diamond
Could a shaped heartaches
Come to find ya fall in some velvet morning."

craola likely knows this already, but no one knows what is actually being said in one part of Degausser by Brand New - including the band. I like

Others have heard "fall asleep in the alkaline", "fell asleep on the anchor line", "fall asleep in the end tonight", "fell asleep at an incline", "fall asleep in the afterlife", "fell asleep as my chest divides"(i really can't hear that one but like it a lot), and what I think must've been a joke "fell asleep with a bear, collide!". Those are just the ones that agree with "you've come back bur you're running" or similar hearings, others are like "You burned bright but you've run out", "you're burned bad but you're running", etc. We'll never know

Turned out "Gonna find a virgin and a pelican" was really "Glorified version of a pellet gun". What a letdown.

I'll second this one, was really disappointed Thom was just singing about real estate in the end.

In a similar vein I had a friend who was gutted that in Eels '3 Speed' it was 'I thought I saw a bomb' and not 'I thought I saw her bum'.

I thought in When The Sun Hits the lyric at the end of the chorus was "you're his sunbeam" but it's "you're his song yeah". that's so boring.

"I hate people when they're not to blame."

It's a funny line that I guess I imagined. Byrne's delivery also sells it perfectly, that conflict is more unpleasant when other people are in the right than when they're in the wrong. The mental image of a bitter person getting disproportionately angry at a nice person. A slice of ironic psychoanalysis that fits perfectly with the rest of the song and encapsulates the character's point of view.

Have you ever had a favourite lyrics in a song then found out that what's said isn't what you thought and actually sucks pretty bad?

On the final song of 'Be' Common follows the tradition of having his father do some spoken word at the end, and he usually says some pretty cool, wise stuff. I'd always heard 'Be on time, with nowhere to go' and thought that was a really sweet mantra to have, like you should always be in the right place at the right time but always be a wanderer and let life take you where it will. An impossible paradox to achieve but one you should aim for. When I first heard it I was like 'woa, I need that above my desk' but then I googled it and it turns out it's 'Be on time, but know when to go' which I suppose is just about being punctual or something, I dunno.

Then the one I just discovered is Wilco's 'Jesus, Etc.' I always thought he sung 'Our love is all we have ... Our love is all we've got's money', like halfway through the sentence he changes its meaning to be more about commercialism than love and how maybe his love is really just shallow and he realizes that if he didn't have this love he'd still have money left in the bank and he could keep living. Instead it turns out it's 'Our love is all of God's money' which is just a fairly lame love-song lyric that doesn't really mean anything.
