Revolver. I honestly don't like Sgt. Pepper's very much. There are a few stellar songs, but then there is "Getting Better", which is easily one of my least favorite Beatles songs, and then "Lovely Rita", "She's Leaving Home", and "Good Morning Good Morning" are all pretty lackluster, as well. And I'm not sure I'll ever understand the grand appeal of "A Day in the Life". I really like Lennon's part, but McCartney's bit kind of kills it for me. It's an okay song, but one of the best of all time? Not sure I see it. "Within You Without You", however, is positively stunning. Then again, Harrison's songs are generally the best on any of their albums imo.

Revolver, meanwhile, is one of my favorites and an absolute masterpiece. Easy choice for me.

Since I have nothing better to do right now... I'll break down why I chose my choice:

Out of the 14 songs on Revolver, 7 of them did not get 100/100 for me, and this is why (granted almost all of them got 90s):

90 Love You To: Got a 90. As much as I LOVE the instrumentation, 80% of the lyrics are ridiculous
90 Here There and Everywhere: While still a 90, it's a bit boring.
50 Yellow Submarine is in my opinion the worst Beatles song

90 And Your Bird Can Sing: This starts a string of pop songs that are alright, but get a little monotonous. By itself it's not that bad, but neither is it a 100. Fantastic bass work and the solo gives it a 90.

90 Doctor Robert - While I like the vocals, over time they bore me a bit. I also don't like the fade out.
90 I Want To Tell You: While I love the piano and the guitar part is very modern for its time. The bass and vocals are a bit boring.
90 Got To Get You Into My Life: While the vocals are interesting, the song is a bit boring for some reason. I like the horn section and the tone of the vocals, but it seems a little to simplistic lacking something to make it amazing.

Whereas....

There's not a single song on Sgt. Pepper's that I find lacking in any way, and there's something magical about it... the instrumentation, the studio work, the concept of this album going on tour for them (sometimes they'd play two shows a day they were booked so heavily).

Sgt. Pepper is just a magically perfect album for me.
hehehe... silly taste.

Yeah, guess I should have lead with the subjective nature of my claim. 🫢

I actually rather like the instrumentation of the song, but it's one of those times that Paul drifted too far into cloying sentimentality for me to follow along.

oh no worries. I'm not invalidating your taste/opinion... just saying it's totally top 10 songs for me, and for similar reasons as AAL2014 indicated. It reminds me a bit too much of my family.... hits home you could say.

There are songs that are overly sentimental and make me barf and totally get that... this song is just not kitschy like that.... for me... if it is for you, that's fine.

Yeah, guess I should have lead with the subjective nature of my claim. 🫢

I actually rather like the instrumentation of the song, but it's one of those times that Paul drifted too far into cloying sentimentality for me to follow along.

That's very interesting, because the strongest part of that song for me is Paul's narration of the events in the lyrics. I get what you are saying about the immense sentimentality though. I guess for me the story is just too gripping.

Buuuut between the two... I have a soft spot for Sgt Pepper I guess. It was the first Beatles album I ever listened to from start to finish. I was pretty amazed, but on subsequent listens it became brilliant to my ears. The past couple listens have made it a little tiresome, and that just hasn't happened with Revolver or Abbey Road for me. But Sgt Pepper's greatness doesn't need to be defended. It's legendary in concept, writing, studio effects, the fuckin cover, and of course most of the songs are great. A Day in the Life, With a Little Help, LSD, Within You Without You, are brilliant, and She's Leaving Home is one of the greatest and most underrated songs in their catalog.

Revolver on the other hand has a sleeker production which makes subsequent listens easier to sit through (again, at least in my experience and for my ears). To me it's the album where it all came together in terms of the Beatles' writing and production. I mentioned to a friend earlier in the week that it seems like Highway 61 was just effortless for Dylan to produce and execute, well Revolver is that for the Beatles. The first time I listened to it completely, the first thing I could think to say was something along the lines of, "God damn, that's pretty much perfect." The instrumentation is brilliant including Paul's underrated bass parts, the vocals and harmonies are gorgeous, and almost the entire album is anthemic. Eleanor Rigby made my eyes widen and my jaw drop the first time I heard it.

Again, Abbey Road has always been my favorite of theirs, but between these two, at the moment, I'm going Revolver.

Puncture Repair wrote:

Pepper tends to get too much credit for being 'the first concept album' which is pretty flimsy outside including an intro and outro.

Revolver is a far stronger album, imo. It flows well, but also just has the better collection of songs. Sgt Pepper has LSD, Within You Without You and Day In The Life but that's basically it, the rest is honestly all fairly goofy. The only weak songs on Revolver are Good Day Sunshine and (purely from preference) Doctor Robert.

I wouldn't go that far. In addition to the three songs you mentioned, which are definitely the highlights of the album, Sgt. Pepper's also has good songs in With a Little Help/Mr. Kite/Getting Better/Fixing a Hole, and the title tracks.

Revolver has about the same number of high points with Elanor Rigby, Tomorrow Never Knows, and Love you To. The second half of the album, however, drags really bad for me. Between She Said and Tomorrow Never Knows there just isn't a lot to sink your teeth into, or worth remembering. Pepper's has some low points (She's Leaving Home and When I'm Sixty-Four, but they're spread out so they don't hurt the album as much.

Quote:

White Album trumps both.

Agreed on this though.

????

I think it would be pushing it to say that it was even the 10th concept album 🤣

Nah, there were plenty before this. In The Wee Small Hours, Dustbowl Ballads, Porgy and Bess, A Love Supreme, Giant Steps, Pet Sounds, etc... I just think Sgt. Peppers was a bit bolder on the 'concept' aspect.

That being said, it's my favourite of these two albums. I still think Abbey Road is by far their best though.

Neither are even close to being my favourite Beatles album, but Sgt. Pepper gets my nod of the two. "Lucy in the Sky" and "A Day in the Life" are my favourite tracks on both albums and "I'm Only Sleeping" and "Love You To" my least favourite. Actually, "Love You To" reminds me of Spinal Tap's "Listen To the Flower People". Pretty easy choice for me.

Without A Day In The Life and being the first concept album (although only barely), no one would even think that Sgt. Pepper's is one of their best albums. Revolver has much stronger songs and was their first real experimental album.

Day in the Life would be the best track on either of the two, but apart from that Revolver is much stronger in terms of songwriting.

Oh god, Revolver. All day every day. And this is waaaaay easier a choice than most of you are making it out to be.
