Much like Rob Crow’s last project (Other Men) this is pretty much a love letter sent to the fans of Heavy Vegetable and Thingy— it even features Travis Nelson! And oh god, this seems much more like Heavy Vegetable then Other Men did. I’ve been a fan of Rob Crow since Pinback, but I’ve since identified far more with his many 90s projects. I’m actually surprised Mecca doesn’t love this considering it’s a perfect continuation of the stuff that Rob stopped doing once he moved on to Pinback. It’s a grower with Rob’s old and weathered alt rocker genius going full-on as his mathy rhythms and witty lyricism is on full celebration here.

I totally forgot about this one. I listened to it a couple times when it came out. Really wish I liked it more. I got really into Rob Crow back around 2003 while working at CMJ. I listened to his various projects (Pinback, Thingy, Heavy Vegetable) pretty constantly for a couple years. I think I burnt myself out on Rob Crow by the time Goblin Cock became a thing. This album sounds like what you'd expect out of Rob Crow, but I felt like that's all it is.

This will likely forever remain my favorite thing he's ever done...
I think it goes without saying that this album is pretty melancholic, but it doesn't wear you down with its bleakness. It's not pessimism, it's realism, and I think the strength on this album is in the songwriting, optimism through realism. Musically, it's fine, it didn't strike me as anything amazing, and it all kind of starts to sound the same after awhile, but it's not bad. But for me, the highlight is the songwriting, it shows a different outlook on life for Rob Crow, and it's well done.
