For this project I've worked on I used this spreadsheet to help me keep track of stuff.

It did kind of bother me that I didn't know how to rank anything past 20, and having a number helped me rank something higher than another. It made it barely more logical. Call me an idiot for that, but whatever.

I realize that my scoring isn't scientific AT ALL. It totally is how I feel in the moment of stuff, etc. Totally subject to change.

It is WAY better than my gut feeling and/or I found my self changing some prejudices or rankings that "should" be instead of how I honestly/truly felt. So far I have been much more satisfied with my decade rankings.

How I get the score is I add up my score for each song and then average it out. Another BEA member gave me the idea to do the top 13 songs on a double album and sometimes that works out in my tastes favor and sometimes not.

I think 60 is kind of dislike/average/not terribly interesting and 100 is intellectually interesting as well as makes my heart sing.

I've essentially done away with rating albums. I deleted my ratings here a couple years ago with the intention of restarting from scratch, but I've since abandoned that plan. I just don't find it has much use to me. The thought of plodding through albums and putting a number to them lost its luster somewhere along the way.

This might be the main reason I don't have a chart at the moment. Every time I look at it or edit it, it still looks wrong.

The only "detailed" methodology I have with rating in my current system is weighted averages. What makes a four star album? Well more than half of it probably are songs I loved and rated 4.0 or higher. Pretty simple.

If I like an album better than another, I rank it higher.

EDIT: when it comes to scoring, if I like an album, I give it a 100

If it's Radiohead, it gets a 100. If it's anyone else, it maxes out at 90. If it's been rated by other people, it gets an automatic 10. I only like albums I heard first. Cept Radiohead. Sometimes, if I'm in the mood, I round to the average rating. So if an album is a avg of 62, I give it a 60. If the avg is 84, I give it a 85. This is actually how I rank methodically.

Oh, I've tried the coin flip. It wasn't doing it for me. I found myself reflipping the coins a lot. Take Polly Bradfield's album, for instance. Solo Violin Improvisations is clearly a perfect album, but every coin toss was leading me to a zero. I think I flipped that coin eight times before it came up heads.

I evaluate an album in one minute chunks and assign a binary value to the sixty second experience: a one if it does it for me and a zero if it doesn't. I add up all the numbers and divide by the runtime. For physical releases, the album art is factored into the score as well. I add each page, giving it a binary score and follow the same method. The end result is the objective score an album receives from me the almighty thresher of albums. It's pretty damn accurate too. Utterly subjective. I don't care for historical importance, influence etc... why should I? I'm listening to music for enjoyment, not writing a book.

I count up the number of tracks I like (I add all tracks I like into a big playlist I have for shuffling when I didn't feel like listening to any album in particular) and figure out the percentage of the album I like. Obviously there's some qualifiers, I might just discount songs I didn't particularly like or dislike, or give more weight to longer songs (acting like a 2 minute song and a 10 minute song on the same 4 0 minute album hold equal weight would be ridiculous). This gives me a percentage, which I take 20 away from to arrive at my star rating (I do this so I can accurately model the differing degrees to which I like albums I enjoyed all the music from - can't go giving, say, Duke Ellington & John Coltrane, a nice enough record, and A Love Supreme, my favourite record the same score of 100. Amongst albums with the same ranking I just rank by which I like best.

I've recently realized that, much to Woody Allen's disdain, I measure music on an orgasmic scale. If something keeps my ears flaccid, I give it a 2 or 2.5. If it makes my ears feel tingly and erect, I probably will give it a 3.5 or higher. My five-stars make me ejaculate all over my headphones upon contact.

objectivity built upon subjectivity

For each album, i subjectively decide how much i like each individual song. Album ratings (down to the hundredth) are based on average song ratings on an album (with a little flexibility for full-album experience). All albums are ranked by my album rating. Ties are broken by albums with the better songs. I guess if there's a complete tie by album rating and the same amount of strong songs, then I go back to subjectivity.

All of my decade charts list my album ratings (down to the hundredth decimal place).

This is as close as I could have put into words. I agree completely on feel. 53 might be 53 one week, 56 the next, and 49 the next. That in itself also involves the possibility of adding to the chart as well.
