If somebody were to set out an initial thread outlining what they thought were some interesting ideas about certain albums that are rarely mentioned elsewhere, I'm up for discussing any album. The problem with those top albums is that so many of our views have already been discussed in the past on BEA, or are otherwise (consciously or not) informed by mainstream publications that I don't exactly see a huge amount of scope for new discussion, but I could certainly be wrong. It depends on to what extent people are willing or able to say something fresh about those canonical classics. I'd just start a thread to take nominations, pick the first eight, and put them to a poll for a couple of days. The nominee would then be responsible for setting up the thread. (Or something along those lines.) If it doesn't work, we go back to drawing board.

Seth - if you wanna take charge of this, go for it. I'd say make an initial thread, myself or one of the other mods will sticky it, and either take nominations like Skinny mentioned, or model it after the ALC and just set up a schedule. Whatever you think works best.

Also, if we did the occasional canonical classic, that could be interesting, as long as everyone is willing to approach the album with fresh ears

OK, fantastic points of view on the cannon (thanks for taking the time to say that because it helped me see where everyone is coming from) and I'm a little torn between the ALC vs the poll idea. Poll would confirm (more or less) interest, but what if nobody is interested... hahaha.

Just to get things started I'd like to nominate a cruelly underrated album namely Eroica by Wendy & Lisa. It is part of my personal top 100 chart and is rankend only 223rd in 1990 and 13836 overall. But I Do think it is an album many people can relate to and of course I'm willing to defend it if it gets nominated.

Agreed. I like the idea of pulling an album from your personal top 100 that isn't in the overall BEA top 100. We already have "Album of the Day" threads that albummaster does all the time, and that covers a lot of territory within the top sect. I'd rather stumble across gems than rehash albums that have been talked about two thousand times by NME, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, et al.

So... part of my problem with the ALC is I actually want to talk about BEA top 100 albums, so maybe I'll just go back to my hole.

I guess I should be more realistic and realize that if those projects don't have interest/discussion, who's to say this idea would actually fuel discussion.

All I know is I want to talk about music and not just recs and thanks that was cool. I'm not as much of a new music junkie as much of those that post more often... I wonder if more would participate if it weren't only geared toward new music?

It's the pluralistic views of people (I don't care about eloquent writing from music critics so much) that interest me about WHY they love an album or hate an album. I'm not saying we have to do the BEA top 100... but I really don't see any discussion about them and I don't really understand why it is taboo. I mean... it is 20,000 people saying those are their favorite albums, right? Maybe you'll learn something new about an album you thought you hated, but maybe are learning to like... idk. I want to respect the classics and feel that's looked down upon... I want both to exist (new music and diving into details of Elvis' debut or something "lame" like that).

Again, maybe I just put my efforts into the ALC and Spotify project and shut up.

Another idea is we limit it to a person's number one album... they discuss why it's their absolute favorite (or maybe why it deserves to be in their top 10... idk)... then there's people who don't care about order at all (so they claim at least).

So if enough people like this idea, go nuts and get it started! I think maybe I'll try and focus on ALC and Spotify Listening project to give them the attention they deserve.

No, I love the idea. I just hope we can maintain participation. The 2016 ALC has never lasted longer than the six months is lasted this year, and even then, the last month or so had virtually no discussion.

But I'm definitely willing to give it a shot, I think it could be a lot of fun.

Glad this excites us.

I too liked the idea of having a thread dedicated to an album (If so I imagine that going to the Music forum, not games). A little concerned that it would be overkill/messy whereas having one thread with an album per week sounds helpful... having said that, such a format wouldn't help discussion.

I also liked the idea that the discussion is live so that it can morph into a real discussion instead of point/counter point less "human" of a discussion. Using skype and then copy conversation into thread for later review. Maybe that's what starts the thread? Maybe we have a virtual listening party Sunday nights (a host per continent/timezone group... EMEA & Americas enough?) or something like that and then can comment/relisten discuss more in detail throughout the week.

It's too bad there's this thing called copyright because SoundCloud offers a comment at a point in the song thingy that's pretty neat and I think would be fun to use something similar so you could comment at a certain point of the song... referencing the time is perfectly fine too though. It probably wouldn't be the norm to comment that detailed, but for the once in a while reference/seeing everyone's comments at a particular time in the song all in one place would be rad.

So could we agree we do the following:

1) Stickied thread where we nominate albums. I think nominating an album is probably the best way to go and maybe we need to have x amount of people agree on it (for the purpose of fueling a discussion) because one concern is that it falls apart because two weeks in a row someone gets bored with the choices and stops participating?Also totally agree not one person should manage this... it is a community and maybe the thread of nominations would allow anyone to help manage/keep it alive?

2) Each album gets a new thread in the Music forum (Originally thought this might be a game... but lets turn the Music forum into precisely that).

Mind help co-writing the OP "guidelines"/purpose statement/whatever you want to call it. Here's a go but feel free to better:

As much as we love the album page, it doesn't allow for real back and forth discussion.

This week we invite any and all to check out this album and REALLY listen to it. Share all you learn/all you love/all you hate about the album, but please refrain from a post that just says, "me likey". Give some detail. Tell us why and how you've come to your conclusions. Ask good open ended questions that fuel good discussion.
