As usual though, if a film isn't constituted as eligible, it doesn't usually get enough votes to make the list anyway.

It is a kind of interesting question, it's not tagged as horror on IMDb but things that are horror and would count for this list as is include Vampire's Kiss and Hellboy. Other ones that aren't tagged horror but an argument could be made are things like Monster House, Pan's Labyrinth, Shutter Island, The Sixth Sense, Aliens, Jaws, Super 8. I wouldn't have a number of those on my list personally but to have a horror list without at least allowing Jaws feels wrong

The more the better for sure. A top 50 horror films list is less likely to have any interesting films I haven't seen... On the flip side there's little chance I could make 100 romantic comedies but that's where the power of user recommendations comes in handy.

I've always found it interesting how so many people are turned off by horror films. Sure, as a whole it doesn't have near as many 5-star films as nearly any other major genre (it's like the metal of movies; dark, appalling to many kinds of people, multiple defined subgenres). I suppose I understand in some ways. However I feel like there are at least a couple dozen horror films that pretty much anybody should enjoy.

I'd say to maybe judge it based on the number of responses coming in? I dunno, since it is a shorter time period to get a list ready, it's possible less people may submit, but also possible since it's a fairly accessible poll it won't really matter.

Top 50 horror? I was thinking top 666. I like the idea of not having to wait 6 months this time though. 🤣 I just hope we don't end up with psychological thrillers and detective stories all over it; pretty sure 80% of the internet thinks Silence of the Lambs is horror, and then the other 20% watch actual horror movies.

For real though, a top 100 would we way better. Look at all the legit classics we have:

Silent classics like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, Phantom of the Opera.

The Universal classics like Frankenstein, Dracula and the Wolf Man.

The Val Lewton classics like Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie and The Body Snatcher.

The 50s wave of sci-fi horror like The Thing, War of the Worlds and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Big studio horror films of the 60s like Psycho, Cape Fear and Rosemary's Baby.

Low budget 60s classics like Carnival of Souls, Repulsion and Night of the Living Dead.

Italian horror like Black Sunday, Suspiria and The Beyond.

Slashers like Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Child's Play.

Horror-Comedy like Evil Dead 2, Dead Alive and Shaun of the Dead.

Modern day classics like 28 Days Later, Saw and The Descent.

See? There's 30 good ones right there. I didn't even mention Hellraiser, The Shining, The Exorcist, The Omen, Cannibal Holocaust, Dawn of the Dead, Evil Dead, Near Dark, Last House on the Left, I Spit On Your Grave, or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Oh and the Hammer horror films, I nearly forgot them. And Roger Corman and David Cronenberg... And Asian horror, which I assume will be heavily represented. Then there's gonna be all this low budget weird recent shit that only has 29 total ratings on IMDb but has somehow been seen by half you guys. Then the people who are gonna vote for crime thrillers, surrealism, and Steven Spielberg killer animal films that may or may not belong. So yeah this should totally be 100, with the full understanding that most of y'all actually dislikes your #100 horror film but finds admirable horror qualities in it.

We could do the 30s through November and December. The idea for a Valentine's Day rom-com list makes perfect sense if we're doing horror for Halloween. It seems nothing is the unanimous choice but this seems fair and sensible.

I'd love a halloween horror quick one. It'd be a nice little buffer between the 40s and 30s, where a lot of those of us voting could maybe use the time to find some more movies to fill out our 30s lists but I'd imagine a lot of those voting have more of a knowledge of general horror movies than 30s.

I'd definitely be interested in best ever film soundtracks.

Horror might be my least favorite genre of film, with the exception of The Shining which is an incredible film. Not sure if I'd take part in that poll though it's certainly appropriate for October.

I think the must frustrating part of these polls is that I always find a whole bunch of recs from them and say to myself "this should have been on the list I submitted" 🤣

I just watched Sullivan's Travels and it was fantastic. Would have easily made my top 10.

Also, is anyone interested in Best Ever Film Soundtracks? I know we were going to have a contest for it, but it went bust. Being a music-based site and all, I'm just curious to see if this has any interest.

If not, horror movies could be a good side-poll for Halloween 😄

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of best ever horror films as the next poll. It will be October in a few days so tis the season. Make Halloween the deadline. Merc, how about best ever romance films in Jan/Feb with a Valentine's Day deadline? That sound good to you? Lol.

My vote is to continue along the decades with a 30s list (so I have more reason to watch a bunch of films like I did for this list) or film scores.
