GregorSama: It doesn't surprise me that nobody's mentioned The Streets. Whilst I think Mike Skinner is a nice enough guy, I think he's thoroughly mediocre as a lyricist. Like the Arctic Monkeys and The Enemy (bands I can't stand), his appeal lies solely in being a 'geezer who tells it like it is'. Personally, I think his is a rather contrived attempt at being genuine, what with the whole middle-class brummy background being veiled with an all-too-common working class mockney persona.

Besides, I think his delivery technique is closer to that of a spoken word artist than a rapper.

Canibus is a fantastic lyricist in my opinion. In no way does someone like Mike Skinner come close to matching him. Check out For Whom The Beat Tolls. Some quality shit on there.

Eminem of course would seem to be the only (prominent) rapper with a sense of humour and the only one since 2pac with a blatant disregard for the status quo.

Lauryn Hill is a good rapper too. At least on The Score with The Fugees. The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill is also really good.

Daz/Kurupt/Tha Dogg Pound (whatever you wanna call them) are good too. Especially if you like the whole 90's west coast vibe. Naturally, the best hip hop producer is Dr Dre. Nobody else comes anywhere near him.

Good stuff, Johnny. I won't try to top it. Have you heard Viktor Vaughn's (MF DOOM alias) 'Vaudeville Villain" album? Doom has a solid discography, and no matter how much acclaim the Madvillainy album gets, I still think VV is his best work and the closest to a hip-hop classic of anything this decade.

If you're into lyrics, compelling ones at that, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Canibus.

Would highly recommend any of his albums to you if you're into Dylan/Young.

For Whom The Beat Tolls, Rip The Jacker and 2000BC should cover it.

                          Wu-Tang Clan is so good.

At first they are so different from all other gangsta rap that it's hard to listen to because of it's stripped down style and it's production style but once you get into it it is amazing. The Lyrics are witty, deep, and sometimes really funny. (Method Man; just listen to the beginning) Overall it is a fantastic album
