Dylan's voice is perfect for his songs, I rarely even like covers by other artists.
That being said, All Along The Watchtower is all Jimi's, he made the song so much better (but definitely not because of his voice). Jimi's version of Like A Rolling Stone is not so good.

Iit's possible for an artist to have a "good" voice and integrity or authenticity or whatever intangible word you want to apply, so why settle? Plenty of "good" voices are also unique. Unique need not be a synonym for mediocre (or in the case of Dylan, far worst than mediocre)

The topic of this thread is a perfect example. Nobody would accuse Jimi of having an American Idol voice, but he handles the song quite well, actually singing through his mouth rather than his nose, and not employing that horrible affectation that needlessly emphases and draws out the last syllable of every line. And he can actually demonstrate some real proficiency on his guitar at the same time, unlike nasal Bob.

I don't watch any of those shows, and I actually do like quite a few vocalists who would never be accused of having technically great or "pretty" voices.

Dylan's voice works better depending on the subject matter of the song, I wouldn't want hendrix to do a cover of Like a rolling stone

One Watchtower cover not yet mentioned is by the Scottish Celtic Rock band Angus Mohr. -- kinda like the Hendrix version plus bagpipes-- trust me, it's better than it sounds on paper.

The other unmentioned version I love is a marvelous live acoustic rendition by new age guitar virtuoso Michael Hedges on his album Live on the Double Planet.

It's also the best. 😉

Keep in mind that Womack basically covered Hendrix's arrangement instead of Dylan's original.

Personally I find that Hendrix's epic guitar playing makes it better than the Dylan version, which i do like
