I probably shouldn't have used two of the greatest directors of all-time for my argument, but I was trying to say that the quantity of movies produced in that era was staggering. Production companies pumped out movies like an assembly line, usually on a low-budget.

This is a non-90s film, but watching Al Pacino debase himself in "Jack and Jill" reaches a weird meta-level in this scene, which actually makes this horribly unfunny movie, funny.

Link

Showgirls is up there. It's gloriously overracted, horribly written, and probably makes me laugh more than many actual comedies. Don't even get me started on the pool scene.

The number one movie on that list I had is god awful. SB Nation did a video on how it's one of the worst sports movies, but I think it's easily one of the worst movies period.

Take this scene, for example, it reaches an almost Lynchian level of surrealness. BTW that is a man in some sort of chimp costume, but it's supposed to be a real chimp in the movie. He plays minor league baseball with Matt LeBlanc. Oh, and to add another layer of zaniness, this movie was directed by the guy who made the documentary "Dear America: Letters Home From Vietnam" I kid you not.

Reefer Madness is some kind of exemplar of camp (though it's been referenced and imitated so much that it's lost some of its impact), but there definitely was a whole cottage industry of those movies in the 50s and later.

Quote:

Billy Wilder wrote somewhere around 20 movies before he reached an American audience. Has anybody seen one of them?

You mean the German films? His second one as writer, People on Sunday is a well-regarded film and was released by Criterion. It's also famous because of the number of future illustrious filmmakers who worked on it -- Fred Zinnemann, Robert Siodmak (future famous noir director), Edgar Ulmer (future famous noir and low-budget movie director).

Quote:

Same with Hitchcock, he made about 20 films before "The Man Who Knew Too Much" and "The 39 Steps". Not to say that these are necessarily bad but just boring.

His second film, The Lodger, and Blackmail are very good movies -- not boring at all (at least to me). Rich and Strange is downright, well, strange. Not sure what your point is? That pre-50s movies are worse because some great directors had long formative periods?

Quote:

A lot of 70s exploitation horror movies fall flat too. (See "The Wizard of Gore")

Honestly, I haven't seen enough exploitation horror to compare their artistic success in the 70s and, let's say, the 80s. Herschell Gordon Lewis is famous for not caring about quality, was just in the exploitation movie biz for the money.

Quote:

But some of the movies on my ridiculous 90s list are almost of a sadistic nature. Watching famed actors like Burt Reynolds in "Cop and a Half" and Stallone in "Oscar", is a not-so guilty pleasure.

Haha! Guess Kindergarten Cop goes in there too, though it has its fans.

Showgirls is, of course, the most notorious camp movie of the 90s. What's your (next) favorite?

I was trying not to phrase myself that absolutely, but, yes there are some of those kinds of movies before the 50s, but not quite to the same camp/ironic quality.

That is accurate; most bad movies of any decade are just bad, but what I meant was more of the sheer amount of movies that were crapped out by people.

Billy Wilder wrote somewhere around 20 movies before he reached an American audience. Has anybody seen one of them?

Same with Hitchcock, he made about 20 films before "The Man Who Knew Too Much" and "The 39 Steps".

Not to say that these are necessarily bad but just boring.

I do love plenty of 70s and 80s crappy movies. I agree that it's subjective, as to whether they're so bad they're good, which is why I've skewed toward the 90s recently. (Also, good call on 70s schlock being more towards R-rated exploitation films, and the 90s being more towards PG and G films). Black Belt Jones, Black Samson, Sweet Sweeeetback's Badassssss Song, are movies that I enjoy (for the most part) non-ironically. (Which I know makes me sound like a twat). A lot of 70s exploitation horror movies fall flat too. (See "The Wizard of Gore") But some of the movies on my ridiculous 90s list are almost of a sadistic nature. Watching famed actors like Burt Reynolds in "Cop and a Half" and Stallone in "Oscar", is a not-so guilty pleasure.

Tha1ChiefRocka wrote:

"So bad they're funny movies" started in the 50s

Um, Reefer Madness, Maniac (1934), Baby Face (I think it's great, but it's about a woman who literally sleeps her way to the top, justified by Nietzsche!), which can stand in for a large number of scandalous pre-code movies. It's true that in the 50s, thanks to teens going to drive-ins on their parents' disposable dime, campy movies become almost a subgenre unto themselves.

Also in the 40s, there are quite a few B-noir films that have some camp/kitsch (using these words loosely to mean unintentionally funny or outrageous) value, while still being pretty good too! Gun Crazy (you've probably seen it), The Big Combo (also directed by Joseph B. Lewis), Detour, Devil Thumbs a Ride, Born to Kill, Shakedown, The Damned Don't Cry, Phantom Lady, Follow Me Quietly, The Blue Dahlia... the first 20 minutes of On Dangerous Ground with Robert Ryan playing an abusive cop are gold.

Quote:

(most bad movies before this time period are just...bad)

Most bad movies from every decade are just bad. Any other take's just taste. Plenty of bad bad movies in the post-50s decades -- Robin Williams made quite a few of those in the 90s etc.

Quote:

The 60s 70s and 80s had many of the same types of bad movies. Sure, there definitely was an increasing amount of terrible studio pictures, but nowhere near as many as there was in the 90s.

There is the phenomenon of indie B/exploitation-type stories becoming studio B/exploitation movies after Jaws, Star Wars and Superman, but I submit that the ratio of good to bad studio movies has largely been the same as long as there have been studios. Whether they're so-bad-they're-good is mostly subjective. Certainly the 70s have as many of those as any other decade, it's just that most of them weren't studio movies (though the studios put out quite a bit of strange or campy shit then). 500 blaxploitation movies came out in the 70s, just for instance.

Seems to me the biggest material difference between 70s and 90s SBTG (so bad they're good) movies isn't quantity or what company made them, but that more of the 90s movies are PG and G movies, and more of the 70s movies are R and even X.

Checked the list further and saw other movies from my childhood like Spice World and Cats vs Dogs.

Also, why wasn't the Austin Powers movies on this? And there are a couple movies on this list I kinda want to see.

Have you seen anywhere close to an equal number of films from every decade?

I'm sure not many people could claim seeing an "equal" number of films from each decade, but I've more than enough under my belt from every decade to make this claim.

Classic Hollywood kind of bores me now, and I've gotten tired of the 70s.

"So bad they're funny movies" started in the 50s (most bad movies before this time period are just...bad) with B grade horror movies that have largely retained their charm. The 60s 70s and 80s had many of the same types of bad movies. Sure, there definitely was an increasing amount of terrible studio pictures, but nowhere near as many as there was in the 90s. I've gotten just as much enjoyment out of watching the endless trash pile of 90s movies as anything else in recent times. And, underneath the garbage heap are some really great lesser-known documentaries and arty-type films that are provocative and interesting. Or just batshit crazy.

Can I get a double feature of a Harmony Korine movie and a Jon Turtletaub movie?

Gummo and 3 Ninjas?

Just look at this list of movies I made on IMDB. It's terrible!
Aliens is popular with the general public -- great James Cameron action movie -- but Alien is considered the best.

Not my favorite horror subgenre, but there are several really good ones. Never liked knives and needles used onscreen that much, though I'm okay with chain saws!

Quote:

Forrest Gump is garbage

It sucks. I can name 5 Oscar Best Picture winners from the last 15 years that suck too. And another 5 that are meh at best.

Quote:

John Wane Sucks

When I was a kid I mainly knew Wayne as this right-wing Western guy (and I hadn't seen a great Western yet). But he's great. Have you seen The Searchers and Red River?

Quote:

Most pre 70 classics are ok at best.

To me this is the same as saying most pre-80s albums are ok at best. Unfortunately as the population gets younger, both are becoming more common opinions.

Quote:

Comedy holds up best to repeat viewings

There's something to that, but not just them.

Quote:

It is ok for a movie to be made just to have fun watching not everything needs to be life changing to be good.

Yes... but it's okay for a movie to be artistic too.

Quote:

For the most part Tarantino's movies get progressively worse.

Yes, though the Jackie Brown-Kill Bill-Inglourious Basterds run gets progressively better.

Quote:

Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Dazed And Confused are both legitimately great movies on several levels.

Most film buffs consider Dazed and Confused to be great and Fast Times at Ridgemont High to be very good.

These of course are all my own opinions as well.

There are some legitimately great films in the slasher genre.
Forrest Gump is garbage
John Wane Sucks
Most pre 70 classics are ok at best.
Comedy holds up best to repeat viewings
Val Kilmer in Tombstone is among the top 2 or 3 performances in Cinema history.

I kind of agree with the one about dr. Strangelove. All of his movies surrounding that one I love, and I've watched over and over again. But Dr Strangelove not so much. I'm not sure why I like it less than most people do.

                          the Bourne movies suck.
James Bond movies suck.

movies need more establishing shots.
more. more. more.

Pink Floyd's The Wall, the film, was the greatest and worst thing ever.
greatest cause the idea was beautiful, and i wish more artists followed suit.
worst because that film was mostly a disaster, minus the trip'd out animated bits.
but am i surprised? the album was pretty hit-and-miss too, so there's that.

--- not an opinion, but where are the great comedies of our day? how come none of these movies ever make me laugh anymore? is it ME? am i a curmudgeon? or are people just not funny anymore? ---

what about bob is/was the greatest comedy in film until someone proves me otherwise. never seen anything even half as funny.

using CGI for The Lego Movie was the stupidest decision anyone has made in the entertainment industry ever possibly. the argument about how much it would cost to do it in stop motion was the lamest B.S. i've ever heard. seriously, Lego has all the legos in the world, and they can just sell ALL OF THE MATERIALS after they finish production. they could probably even auction off the more iconic pieces. they had a chance to pay tribute in the most awesome way AND show off their product in the bestest way, but they CGI it anyway. and you know what? stop motion would've been a gazillion times cheaper even if they didn't plan on selling off parts after the fact. lame. lame. lame. bummed beyond all get-up.

and while i'm *****ing, stop giving awards to Disney and Pixar. there are half a dozen studios out-performing them year-in and year-out.

Both Zardoz and Southland Tales are each amazing in their sheer audacious, knocked-upside-of-the-head absurdity -- and vastly underrated. Though each are far from my all time favorite films, they're both amazing and, (in their own backwards way) "ingenious", at being so extensively absurd. The (many) critics of these films generally don't seem to realize that they're all-out satires that hardly take themselves seriously, yet rate/critique them as if they do.

It's not like this is a conversation about what to do with nukes or fake sweden attacks) opinions already stated before I make my own responses

Hayden wrote:

-Not only do I find that The Godfather series is not great, but I find that it is actually quite bad, stale and cheesy. I guess, controversial to certain circles... I still actually like the godfather
-The Hurt Locker is terrible Not great, but works in certain regards
-Same with American Sniper
-Martin Scorsese is a hit or miss director actually pretty consistent until the 90s, then yes most definitely
-Pixar's 20 years > Disney's 80 years hard to make an easy comparison because of the radical shifts in technology, and disney's years in the WWII era were stellar (and pixar has been wildly inconsitent in the 2010s
-Only God Forgives isn't that bad, I don't know why people dish on it so much
-Baz Luhrmann is potentially the worst director of the last 25 years and releases absolute embarrassments of films He's for certain tastes but for this viewer tastes like moldy ranch dip and the subsequent food poisoning)
-Whiplash is seriously flawed (yet I do enjoy lots of it)
-Gus Van Zant's Finding Forrester-Paranoid Park phase was god awful Finding Forrester was pretty bad, yes
-Wavelength should not be considered a great work of cinema
-Apart from Silver Lining Playbook, David O. Russell is pretty bad Spanking the Monkey and I Heart Huckabees have their moments but yes he's quite overrated
-Sadly, the majority of Canadian cinema outside of Quebec is really bad You probably have a better gauge on this I do but Ive liked a lot of Canadian cinema across the continent from the small sample I've seen
-The Night of The Hunter is too silly to take seriously I like it's dated hamminess, no masterpiece though
-The cinematography in Marvel films is usually terrible Uh, not the first thing I think about when critiquing those films, but sure why not
-Brazilian cinema is severely under-appreciated A lot of countries are
-Steven Soderbergh has one of the best filmographies that doesn't have a clear stand-out magnum opus His best film is still his first film, despite it's flaws
-Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Pt.1 is the best HP film No
-Clean is Olivier Assayas's best film (but Personal Shopper is pretty dope) Ill take your word for it, behind on Assayas
-Romania, Turkey, Hungary and Iran are making some of the most interesting and powerful films in cinema right now Ill add Germany and Isreal but that's usually true

Quote:

- Russel Crowe's only good performance is in A Beautiful Mind He was quite strong in The Insider nad Master and Commander though those were dissapointing films overall
- David Fincher's Best Movie is the Social Network Id go with Zodiac but I guess I like boring movies
- The Narration in Sunset Boulevard pretty much ruins the movie It's essential
- Dr Strangelove isn't that funny It's not intended as pure laugh-out-loud comedy, but it mostly works when it does go for that
- Gladiator is terribly overrated Despite it's oscar win, is it revered as that great of a film? If so, then yes
- Boyhood is a gimmicky movie that tries to cover up is lack of interesting content by trying to be nostalgic It's terribly overrated but it's got it's worthwhile merits beyond just IT TOOK 12 YEARS TO MAKE!!!!!! though the third hour is a letdown
- Scott Pilgrim vs the World is better than the Entire Cornetto Trilogy Cornetto trilogy is inconsistent and Scott Pilgrim I found.... pretty good, but not fully realizing it's film potential
- Albert Brooks is one of the most underrated directors of all time
- Christopher Guest's movies aren't that funny Best in Show works far beyond just a yakfest, but his filmography is inconsistent
- Richard Linklater's Best movie is Dazed and Confused No, but it has it's charms

Quote:

he world needs more films like The Dark Crystal.
the world needs more puppets.
the world needs more fantasy.

the only great anything about Star Wars was the stuff Jim Henson and Frank Oz contributed.
Ive been meaning to ask do you enjoy Jim Henson or Frank Oz?

Lord of the Rings would have been better with Jim Henson and Frank Oz at the helm.
That my friend makes for an infinitely fascinating "what if.....

stop motion is more enchanting than computer animation.
cel animation is more exciting than computer animation.
actually, computer animation is mostly garbage.
Completely relying on aestithetic personal taste so hard to argue

Disney Fantasia is better than all of Pixar combined.
Pinocchio is better than all of Pixar combined.
suck it, Hayden.
Haha.... but no WWII era disney is nearly unparalleled, and Pixar's output is far from flawless

the most exciting releases today are documentaries.
Lots of great documentaries in the 21st century, sure

superhero movies are boring. not just overblown. out-and-out boring
Too blanket a statement, but a lot of them have felt pretty interchangeable for the past decade or so and the fact that there's four or five yuge releases each summer it really just becomes a blur. When one is actually geniunely great and surprising I think that almost makes the 1 percent worth dying for
