Powderfinger are the essential Australian rock band. Starting with a horrible album in Parables For Wooden Ears, they turned it around and delivered Internationalist as their third effort. They won several ARIAs (Australian "grammys") and gained critical acclaim. When Odyssey #5 arrived, they released songs like My Happiness and My Kind Of Scene that for loyal fans, seemed to sell out. I think the appeal of Powderfinger is that Australia always need a rock act to follow. Some may be too alternative or too soft but Powderfinger had it right for its audience. Beating acts like AC/DC, Nick Cave, Church, Midnight Oil, Triffids, Go-Betweens and Silverchair (to name a few) is a big task. Connection I think is the key. AC/DC are still hugely popular but some may see the band as "bogan" rockers. The Oils are replaced now by The Living End (in political stance) and Silverchair lost fans after Young Modern (I think).

Critical acclaim unfortunately in a listeners' poll is irrelevant. Although Since I Left You may be the Industry's choice, many may not know the album, artist or music. Experimental, different and innovative; for sure. Popular; far from it. Powderfinger delievered mainstream rock to an audience that wanted that. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending how you view it), Australia would never embrace a Merriweather Post Pavillion or Trout Mask Replica as the greatest album of all time. Even on BEA, AC/DC seems to be the Aussie favourite and personally, I ain't a fan.

Longwinded response. Guess school holidays allow teachers to relax and let their minds roll free!

Congrats to the Finger and sorry to Savage Garden for not even getting a guernsey.

I agree that the list lacks diversity but the list is comprised of votes by 47,000 Triple J listeners. Unfortunately most would not know of or care for Triffids, Church, Radio Birdman or Dirty Three. From the initial 20 or so, I knew the list would be heavy in the 2000s and this reflects the listening audience. I have Calenture by The Triffids and Starfish by The Church in my selection but doubt they will be there.

A reminder that this is not a critics list but a listener poll. Therefore your credibility jab may be valid but Australian music is still adolescent in critical acclaim and "greatness" compared to the UK and US.

I go on triple J since Jhereko told me about it. I think it's a great site. There is good local music from unsigned bands on there. I don't think the problem is quality as much as it is promoting it.
