sethmadsen wrote:

I don't know if this is accurate, but fun to play anyway.
https://www.sporcle.com/games/tk926/artists_top_500_album

According to this Beatles do have the most top 500 albums... but that's according to Rolling Stone.

The consensus vs Rolling Stone.... I'll go with the consensus, which includes Rolling Stone (but shouldn't b/c they're ridiculous). Our list is way better than their's.

They don't even have OKC in the top 150, that's a far cry from anything reasonable....

Elvis Costello's Imperial Bedroom is better than Is This It or In Rainbows or The Queen Is Dead, what a joke. And how many "best of's" can you cram into the top 200? Kiss's Alive and B-52's are better than Transformer, alright.

How many rap albums can they put ahead of Illmatic? They can't even properly rank any individual band's albums.

There's a collection of Christmas tunes ahead of every album I've already mentioned. If you can't count on exactly 0 fingers the amount of albums which include versions of Here Comes Santa Claus, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, and Frosty the Snowman and that are better than a third of our top 100, then you don't deserve fingers.

You know where The Dark Side Of The Moon ranks? In between 2 of The Beatles' worst albums, Meet The Beatles and Please Please Me. Yeah, MEET the Beatles, the US version, not even the real version of the album, WITH The Beatles. So pathetic.

The best Zeppelin album by a LONG SHOT? Well, that would be LZ1 of course. Agrees nobody.

NO. No thanks Rolling Stone. Their list angers me. Slap in the face after slap in the face.

I know of only 1 Rock artist that produced more than 1 all time masterpiece (by strict standards, relative to the all time masterpieces of Classical music). And that would be The Velvet Underground (VU and Nico, WL/WH). However, "great" can be stretched far more than that. I would probably call anything I rate 7/10 and above "great". Maybe 7.5/10 (or, more specifically, "7.3") is a better point to start as that makes it pretty exclusive (my criteria: https://www.besteveralbums.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15503 ). With "7.3/10+" in mind (which is an extraordinary, substantial achievement in my criteria), probably Tim Buckley or Frank Zappa or Lisa Germano. Neil Young and Bob Dylan deserve strong consideration too. But overall, I'd probably rank Velvet Underground and Captain Beefheart above those artists, even if slightly.

EDIT: We're considering Jazz too, correct?

Then, Charles Mingus. Followed -- in any order -- by John Coltrane, Anthony Davis, Miles Davis, Sam Rivers, Roscoe Mitchell/Art Ensemble of Chicago...

I guess it does depend on your definition of great. Its just SO subjective. Fact is, if you dont like something, you'll never agree with anyone that its great. For instance, I dont find Tim Buckley or Zappa great, i find them horrifying.

Dude! Slash has hundreds of albums! Willie Nelson too! How have you forgotten?! Just kidding.

Anyway.... Bowie. Easily #1 in this particular department. Great albums:

Space Oddity

The Man Who Sold The World

Hunky Dory

Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars

Aladdin Sane

Diamond Dogs

Young Americans

Station To Station

Heroes

Low

Lodger

Scary Monsters

Let's Dance

Outside

Heathen

The Next Day

Blackstar

NINE of these are in our top 500 actually. Another 3 are 500-1000. Another 2 just missed top 1000.

No one has more than that, not even The Beatles, Dylan, Zeppelin, or Radiohead. Bowie wins hands down. Where is The Beatles' top 500 album from 2016?! Didn't think so.

Oh and I wasn't dissing Willie Nelson, he has a couple really good albums.

Frank Zappa numerically has to have one of the highest outputs of great music.

If we can count production credits I would also nominate Steve Albini and Brian Eno for their own work and the work they have produced.

Madlib and MF Doom would have to be on that same level as well.

I don't know. I'd probably vote R.E.M. for a new contender in those already listed, not only based on quality of their work, but longevity of their career yet still producing valuable albums. Although Nirvana only had a short stint, I feel their discography is likely the strongest (strange for me to say that, yet I'm holding my ground).

Here is a list of artists that have the highest ratings across albums I've rated on this site. Ratings for me are subjective of course and likely anyone claiming otherwise is probably a scaruffi fan.

For me these artists had qualities I approved of as having high values in these areas: accessibility, likability, quality of recording, quality of songwriting (both lyrically and musically), emotionally captivating, intellectually intriguing, etc.)

It depends on the definition of "great".

That is amazing about The Church. Unfortunately, almost all of my favorite artists are the kind who started off with 3 or 4 classic great albums in a row, and ,then there was a really abrupt, sudden huge decline in quality from which they never recovered. I dont know why all my favorites seem to be, that way. Either that type of artist, or else, they're the kind who only made a few albums altogether. Then disappeared.

To the previous poster, 57 4+ star albums since '72, 21 of which are 4.5, and allmusic has much less than a sixth of his discography. And then none of that previous sentence includes any recordings where he's not leader or the group plays under a moniker. The man has had as many legendary lineups as Miles Davis and at this point has been active longer than he was, and has always been significantly more prolific. There's a world going on underground, y'all

Smog/Bill Callahan
Nick Cave
Bob Dylan
Yo La Tengo
Dinosaur Jr
Teenage Fanclub
Sonic Youth
Neil Young
Black Sabbath
The Cure
Rolling Stones
The Beatles

Those are very sensible and plausible picks. Except i dont know smog, and i didnt know Teenage Fan Club had more than 2 albums. Heh heh.

Yeah, SmogBill Callahan is on Drag City so he's not on any streaming service which probably hinders his popularity A LOT nowadays. But, he's easily one pf the best singer-songwriters since the 90s. All his albums are pretty consistently great, but check out...

Also, every single Teenage Fanclub album is a total power pop treasure and GROWERS and they have about ten albums.
