I saw Tortoise at 2am at the 10th Anniversary ATP festival in 2010... It was a great set, with many of the features you mention... Just a shame I was too knackered to fully appreciate it. Probably 4th on my list!

Don't exactly remember the dates

Sleep Tough to decide which time: first time they incorporated Dopesmoker as interludes between songs, beginning and ending with it (they usually mostly play Holy Mountain songs, "Clarity", and then sandwich a Dopesmoker section somewhere in there); second or third time they were supported by Boris and Sunn O))).

Michel Doneda & Le Quan Ninh A duo that's been playing together for about three decades, so their communication was off the fuckin chain. The duo also plays to some of my favorite things in free improvisation, so it was likely a shoe-in before I even saw them.

3. Godspeed You! Black Emperor, St. George's Hall, Bradford, 2002 - seeing GY!BE in my rundown hometown was the perfect setting for their post-apocalyptic music.

2. Sufjan Stevens, Colston Hall, Bristol, 2015 - a recent one, but complete with multiple shiver-down-the-spine moments. Lucky to catch him perform Carrie & Lowell, which is one of my favourite all-time records.

1. Arthur Lee, Fibbers, York, 2003 - I managed to get the last ticket going to see this in a small venue, not long before the great man passed away. The performance was electric.

I've been thinking about this recently about what my favourite shows have been and they all follow a pattern. 1. Obviously an act you love and they play well. 2. How much you enjoy a show is down as much to you as the artist, so being in the right mood, not tired etc. 3. Standing near ish to the front or more than halfway 4. It's loud 5. You are under the influence of something.
I find the last part pretty sad but when I think about the greatest shows I've seen they all seem to tick these points and there are none when I have been completely clear headed. Been thinking about it as I saw kraftwerk the other week and though I enjoyed it, only number 1 applied so I wasn't blown away.

Oh yeah. They were definitely playing all the Loveless material. It was a great multimedia event. Very psychedelic. It was the tour where Dinosaur Jr was their opening act. MBV didn't tour the states that much. Definitely blew me away. Pretty much a spiritual experience. I'm crazy lucky to have caught them twice. 😁

1. Beach House, Vicar Street, 25/10/15 http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/beach-house/2015/vicar-street-dublin-ireland-63f5f647.html - It was the day after I turned 18 and it was absolutely magical. The stage was covered in a hazy mist that fit their sound perfectly and made for a very lovely night. Probably my best birthday ever.

2. Sigur Rós, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, 26/6/16 http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/sigur-ros...fa71a.html - It was a powerful setlist (especially what they played from () and Takk) with one of the best light shows I've seen.

3. Gorillaz, The O2, 11/11/10 http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/gorillaz/2010/the-o2-dublin-ireland-bd555fe.html - First concert I ever went to. I still have fond memories of it.

1) Radiohead @ Hollywood Bowl (supporting hail to the thief)
Best part of the show: when it ended they walked off the stage and you watched them program this complex build up as part of the end of some song (forgot what it was, haha), but they were off the stage and this buildup exploded and slowly piece by piece faded away so you could hear all the complexities.

2) U2 @ Delta Center (supporting ATYCLB)
This was my first concert, but it was the feeling when the band came on stage and the house lights were still on, and then halfway through the edges solo, they kill the lights. Then they made a giant venue feel like you were in their living room.

3) Muse @ Maverick Center
I almost shit myself from the laser show they had. But they also had some subtle interesting political stuff tied into music I never really thought of on a deeper level like that - so in otherwords the show enhanced/added depth to the music instead of just a live production of the same thing you have at home.

Honorable mention:

Flea and John Frusciante playing a few songs from A Charlie Brown's Christmas at a Christmas music recital at Silver Lake Music Conservatory

LA Phil at Hollywood Bowl performing Beethoven's 9th on July 4th.

Jazz combo playing in Central Park (playing jazz I actually liked instead of let's fart on a saxophone)

Beck at the free concert series they have in SLC each year.

Foo Fighters at Universal Amphitheater (I love how Dave plays with time)

So, if you saw MBV in '90 (I am incredibly jealous you've seen them twice) were any songs from Loveless being played yet? I know "Soon" was on the Glider EP, but that's the only one that would later go on another album

I missed seeing that Stevie Wonder show and I still regret it. One of my favorite albums being played in its entirety? What was I thinking?

Warren Ellis was electric when I saw him as well. I like how Nick Cave is so commanding at the front of the stage while Warren likes to play with his back to the crowd.
