For me, Breakin' Up by Rilo Kiley is a great break up song. Only it's from the perspective of someone who couldn't wait to get out of a relationship. It's callously upbeat and feelgood, making it all the more fun and cheekily subversive.

Don't Think Twice, It's Alright is so great because while he's mostly at peace withe the break-up it has just a little touch of venom.

... those ones are a little spiteful, in regards to the topic. seemingly sung by the person doing the breaking up.

then, on the other side of the coin, this one is a bit more remorseful. seemingly sung by the person getting broken up with.

I've never felt Positively 4th Street is intended for an ex lover. It always seemed like it was directed to someone the singer has always hated.

Idiot Wind on the other hand is one of the most complex and brutal songs about a failing relationship. Incredible stuff.

There's a lot of great ones on 69 Love Songs by the Magnetic Fields, but I'll be honest, they're probably not what you'd listen to to drown your sorrows. More like a few months down the road when you're ready to laugh kind of thing.

Yeah. The entire thing takes place in the desperate, down and out atmosphere of street life. very true
