As soon as I saw the thread's name I got so excited to post the same song. Checked the first two posts and no one had posted it yet, so far so good. Then a wave of disappoint hit when I saw you beat me to it.

It's an idyllic cover and better than the original, in my opinion. You're right about the length too.

It's fun to listen to albums like Perfect From Now On, Keep It Like a Secret & You In Reverse just to see how much of an impression Neil Young's work has on them. It honestly feels like they couldn't exist without him and then in turn, Modest Mouse too.

I think it's the bizarreness factor that gives them the edge. That certain quality of total insanity makes all the difference. Lol

Part of what I've always loved about Cortez is that it's such a laid back and almost drowsy song. It never rushes, giving Neil a whole lot of space to explore. This plays it like a straight ahead rock song, which it is not. It's fast and pushing throughout and the drums are way over the top. I was worn out less than halfway though this.

What Neil does with Cortez (and Warren Haynes understood and did the same thing with Gov't Mule) is to not make it a rockfest. This is a song that does well with space and a tempo that doesn't push. It needs dynamics. It needs space. This version has no space...it's straight up loud and rock for 20 minutes. This needs a drummer who plays behind the song...not over it. And a singer who is okay with not being on top of everything. There is no soul in the vocals here at all. That's the problem...everyone is trying to rock this thing out from beginning to end. It's just not that song.

I love Built To Spill. I love Cortez. It's one of my favorite songs, because Neil let's it breathe and doesn't turn it into this. And I love that these guys took it on. But I'm sorry...this does not work for me. Too long, too loud, too fast, too straight up rock.

Here's Mule with Marc Ford from 1999. For me, a much better version.
