Hm, I would say the best cover was done by the Rutles: With a Girl like you. Okay, parody but I prefer it to "the original".
And to get really silly: Best "cover" of I should have known better was done by Wire.

I'm Happy Just To Disco With You

First, an honorable mention for Anne Murray's cover of the next track, "I'm Happy Just To Dane With You". She did really well on other Beatles Covers, which we'll get to.

But I was blown away by this Disco track from 1979:
Track 3: If I Fell

What a beautiful song. This is one of those songs I point to when people say "I don't get what the big deal is about The Beatles". John mostly wrote this, and he and Paul share Everly Brothers like harmonies. It's just a great song.

But the main thing with "If I Fell" is the harmonies. One of those rare perfect two vocal songs. John and Paul were perfect with it. My choice for this is from a duo called the MonaLisa Twins. They are from Austria (they now live in Liverpool), they are actually twins, and their names are Mona and Lisa Wagner. This track is an in between albums bonus that they released in 2016, and it is, in a single word, lovely. Exactly the spirit of what "If I Fell" should be. So...enjoy.

Link

Now bingewatching the youtube Beatles cover versions by these fantastic twins. They play their music in all kinds of different settings: Ayers Rock, playing around in a guitar shop, showing videos of their youth, playing live in the Cavern Club and every single video shows their love for the music.
And If I Fell remains the most fantastic of them all: it just moves me to tears: unfortunately I can't find it on record.

I know! I started watching everything I could find on them. They are really great, and have a really refreshing sound. I don't think that "If I Fell" is on an album...I think it was just an in between albums one-off.

If you haven't already, check out their take on The Beach Boys "God Only Knows". Breathtaking!

Track 1: A Hard Day's Night

Welcome to the John album. The only Beatles album to have all songs credited to Lennon & McCartney...but the reality is that it was mostly Lennon. John wrote the title track here, based on something silly that Ringo said. A great early Beatles tune, worthwhile for the opening chord alone...something you can't say about many songs.

This one has been covered by many artists, from the famous Peter Sellers Shakespearean reading to just about everyone else on down. Many of these are way to campy, and many more are live versions (a last resort for this project). The Hoodoo Gurus did a nice, but very straightforward copy of the song. My favorite is this one. Brazillian singer Rita Lee made a Beatles cover album in 2001 called Aqui, Ali, Em Qualquer Lugar (not on BEA), consisting of Bossanova inspired tracks. A Hard Day's Night is the lead track on this album, and it's an interesting take on one of the band's biggest hits. So..,.here's the first track on the new Hard Day's Night album...
Track 2: I Should Have Known Better

This Lennon track was the first one inspired by the lyrical writing of Bob Dylan. It's also the last Beatles track to feature a harmonica intro. This was not released as a single, either in the US or the UK, but it was a number one hit in Norway.

This song has had surprisingly few cover versions...and most of those are live. But just a few months after The Beatles recorded it, this song showed up again. It was recorded by their Parlophone labelmates. The Naturals, and was a minor hit for them. The Naturals didn't last long...they never made an album, and released only four singles in 1964 and 65 before quietly calling it a day. This version is a bit heavier than The Beatles', and shows just what a fun song it really is. Unlike The Beatles' version, this features plenty of harmonies (John sang it alone, double tracked, with no harmonies).
Monique Kessous (Bossa-Nova version)
Bill Evans (on Banjo)
Ella Fitzgerald

Glass Onion
Ilegales
The Punkles

The best version I found was by the Slamcreepers, a slow psychedelic translation from 1969.

Track 14: Money (That's What I Want)

This song was originally recorded by Barrett Strong in 1959. Written by Janie Bradford and Berry Gordy, it was played early on by The Beatles during the Pete Best days. They knocked it out and used it as the final track on With The Beatles, with John Lennon singing lead.

It's been covered since numerous times, but nobody did it quite like The Flying Lizards in 1979. Their career was short, and they were not, aside from this song, very successful. But it has a unique, weird and quirky charm that makes it the only version I could choose here. You can find the song here:

...the perfect end for the cover version of The Beatlers' second album.

Researching Not A Second Time, I found a band I'd been looking for for a while. I saw TV news magazine story about a Beatles cover band that was venturing off and doing their own stuff. Most of what they have done (since this TV news magazine bit) is not Beatle covers. The band is called "Backbeat".

Link

So, thank you for that.

But the one I thought the best was by R. Stevie Moore. It combines the song with elements from "Don't Bother Me" around the cover. Unfortunately, it's not available on YouTube.

Track 13: Not A Second Time

John Lennon trying to write yet another Motown song. The Beatles were pretty fairly obsessed with soul. Not A Second Time is an interesting track, with some odd George Martin piano and the famous mention of The Beatles in the Aeolian Cadence conversation. John sings it on With The Beatles. It was not a single, and was not a hit.

It's been covered since by quite a few artists, most famously by Robert Palmer. But if you can put Chrissie Hynde on a list...you kinda have to. Pretenders released this in 1990 as the B side of the single "Never Do That". It was not included on the album from that year, Packed!. This is a fairly straight forward version...but it's sung by Hynde, so I'll take it.
Track 12: Devil In Her Heart

If you think The Beatles weren't listening to the world around them, you need only this track to prove yourself wrong. Written by a guy named Richard Drapkin, "Devil In Her Heart" was the only single released by an obscure American soul group called The Donays. It came out in 1962, and it flopped as a single, not being a hit anywhere. But George Harrison happened to hear it, and he brought it to The Beatles. George sang it, and it became an interesting find of an obscure track for their second album.

It was never a hit for The Beatles or The Donays, so finding a cover version after With The Beatles has proven to be a challenge. But I found this. Trevor and Hannah-Lou Moss were members of a rock and bluegrass band called Indigo Moss in the mid 2000's. After the band split, the married couple began recording as a duo. They recorded "Devil In Her Heart" for a Mojo Magazine CD called We're With The Beatles (not on BEA) in 2011. And so, I give you this obscure cover of an obscure cover of an obscure original song.
Track 11: I Wanna Be Your Man

"I Wanna Be Your Man" is mostly a Paul McCartney composition. It wasn't thought of very highly by either Lennon or McCartney, who gave it to The Rolling Stones and then had Ringo sing it for this album. The writing is simple, and was probably a rush job just to get a song out (that's what it sounds like, anyway).

The Stones version is the most important one, as it's the one time they both did the same song. That version is, however, not eligible for this project because the Stones released theirs before The Beatles. So we have to look elsewhere. Listmeister suggested Suzi Quatro's 1973 version, but man...I just can't get into it. She sings it too high for my liking, and the stops she uses seem weird. So, I went with this one. Tais Alvarenga is from Brazil, and she recorded this version for an album called A Tribute To Ringo Starr from 2011 (not on BEA). This is an interesting version, and a different take on how The Beatles and The Stones played the song.
