It's such a maelstrom of an album I know what you mean but I'm going to plump for George Harrison's 'Long long long'. It's such a meandering, strange, atmospheric and evocative and strangely brilliant song, much underrated of course, but I still find the whole premise of this being included in 'other songs' wrong. I hope 'other songs' wins the poll.

'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' stands tall among the Beatles' entire discography, one of their very finest.

'Dear Prudence' comes second, then 'Happiness is a Warm Gun'.

There are a number of really excellent songs but far too much trash. Could've been their best record as a single-LP but as it is, I rate it last among their late 60s output.

Those 3 songs which are on top are indeed a level above the rest, but if I had to I would give my vote for While My Guitar Gently Weeps. It's simply a gorgeous song.

About the whole heavy metal discussion, I don't believe you can say that 1 song created metal, it was a much longer and more complex process and Helter Skelter definitely did contribute to the birth of heavy metal.

I don't really think you can call one song "the birth of heavy metal".
One influential band was Vanilla Fudge, whose self-titled album was released the same year as Steppenwolf.

Both Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin have stated them as a major influence (so has Yes btw, because they were not only proto-metal, they were also proto-PROG).

Yes, but I was just replying to the other post to say that if you are going to call one song the birth of heavy metal, then it is "Born to be Wild".

Vanilla Fudge....I think of them more as a proto-prog band. 🤔 Even if they influenced Zeppelin.

But then, Zeppelin was more of a hard rock band, than a straight-out heavy metal one.

Ritchie Blackmore: " We loved Vanilla Fudge - they were our heroes. They used to play London's Speakeasy and all the hippies used to go there to hang out - Clapton, The Beatles - everybody went there to pose. According to legend, the talk of the town during that period was Jimi Hendrix, but that's not true. It was Vanilla Fudge. They played eight-minute songs, with dynamics. People said, "What the hell's going on here? How come it's not three minutes?" Timmy Bogert, their bassist, was amazing. The whole group was ahead of its time. So, initially we wanted to be a Vanilla Fudge clone"

Ahead of its time? Of course.

Proto-metal? Maybe........ 🤔

But anyway, I STILL haven't been able to decide on my favorite track on this album.......oh, and whoever mentioned the Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Dear Prudence", I just listened to it, and it's a good cover. 😁
