* Ambient Techno
* Big Beat
* Broken Beat
* Dark Ambient
* Detroit Techno
* Downbeat
* Downtempo
* Drill'n'bass
* Electro
* Electro-Jazz
* Electro-Techno
* Electronica
* Experimental Ambient
* Experimental Dub
* Experimental Electro
* Experimental Jungle
* Experimental Techno
* Funky Breaks
* Gabba
* Garage Rap/Grime
* Glitch
* Goa Trance
* Happy Hardcore
* Hardcore Techno
* IDM
* Illbient
* Industrial Drum'n'Bass
* Jazz-House
* Jungle/Drum'n'bass
* Left-Field House
* Microhouse

* Neo-Electro
* Newbeat
* Nu Breaks
* Progressive House

Oh and this doesn't include Witch House, which may or may not stick...

Alternative has become quite the umbrella term, but so are the others. But I wouldn't say it's mainstream: people know of the singles released by obscure bands (e.g. White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes) but rarely listen to the albums or seek out non-popular-single alternative bands

Excellent point. It's like those kids who decide to be different by wearing black...just like all of the others who wish to be...umm...different. lol

...and those sub-genres are sometimes interesting, but for sorting and arranging stuff it makes it impossible to the point that you may just as well throw your whole collection in a big heap.

I too differentiate between pop/rock and alternative when sorting my music collection. Although there are borderline bands, as there are between all styles, the gap between the two genres is as wide as the one between, say, jazz and blues.

EDIT: And I almost forgot. Alternative, as a genre, is of course no longer alternative. It is one of today's mainstream genres.

but it doesn't mean there aren't different alt sub-genres... 😁

It's pop music

What's the alternative?

That's exactly how I've arranged them on my shelf.

As for Talk Talk, I think he was referring to "The Colour of Spring" era. They were a new wave band before being post-rock pioneers.

MBV's "Isn't Anything" isn't yet shoegaze as such. It's noisy alt rock.

"Loveless" is the definition of shoegaze.

Mm, fair enough. I've heard people call MBV shoegaze before actually, still not sure what that applies to though.

If "Crazy Rhythms" isn't post-punk, I don't know what is.

Most shoegaze / dream pop developed through the 80s from darkwave / goth. Early albums from Dead Can Dance (self-titled) and Cocteau Twins ("Head Over Heels") are definitely post-punk.
As for Galaxie 500, dream pop par excellence, they were heavily influenced by post-punk bands and have covered the likes of Joy Division, Young Marble Giants and even the Sex Pistols !!

Television and Talking Heads are often classified as ART ROCK (yeah I still don't know what that means).

I say they're post-punk.

Ya, agreed with the part above. But the later part just leaves me curious on what genre you consider Talk Talk, The Feelies, Big Black, and My Bloody Valentine to be 😕

Post-punk is a way of life. Not a type of music.

Here is a thought: If London Calling was released a few weeks later it would have held the top spot for the 80's for more than 3 years now. 😄
