1987 wasn't the strongest year, but at least it had some strong, while admittedly commercial work (Joshua Tree, Document, Appetite for Destruction, Paid in Full, Diesel & Dust, Sign o' the Times)

I would say 1967, for sure. I mean, just look at the overall chart for 1967... talk about amazing music. Plus, I've always sort of counted "SMiLE" as a 1967 album, since that's basically what it would have been.

After that, I would say a tie between '70, '71, and '72. Then '69 and '01.

Well, among your good reasons, I see REM's worst from that period, The Pogues' worst to date (still good), and one of Springsteen's worst. Enough to make me hate '87! Fortunately, in '87 there were also The Smiths (not their best, but still), Sonic Youth's Sister (awesome), Hüsker Dü, The Wedding Present, Prince, David Sylvian, and the debuts of both Eric B & Rakim and Public Enemy. '87 was good.

'91 is legendary. Loveless and Laughing Stock alone! + The Low End Theory, Dondestan, Blue Lines, Spiderland, and although it's not one of my favourites, Nevermind. All ground-breaking records.
