I didn't care about music until I started hearing things on the radio and seeing things on MTV that were different from what I thought music could be. U2 and the Escape Club or whatever, stuff like that. From then on all my allowance started going into albums! :p
This movie and its music almost had the same effect on me back then.. I started listening to The Shins (select songs, rather than albums though) and some other similar indie/alternative music. But then I heard DSotM and it all went to toilet... At least until 2009 when I re-discovered it, through Broken Social Scene's YFIIP (primarily) and others.

My adventure with music began in dull times when I was about ten years old. At the beginning I listened to the radio mainly because the only way you could hear something interesting. But it was not that much. Then they were in Poland, only four radio stations. From time to time you could buy a disc, most frequently Polish artist. Sometimes it happened that a friend somehow got album of foreign artist and then you could borrow it and on tape. But step by step you get to know new artists and it stuck. Greater access to music appeared only in the eighties.

my parents where not really that big into music but i did have a steady van Morrison, jimmy buffet, rolling stones and weird al diet on family road trips, all bands that i love today. a little later my mom got me addicted to Seal Paul as well which i find amusing.

Then when i was about 15 my sister introduced me to Gogol bordello and Josh Ritter and that's what really sparked my interest in music.

When I was maybe 7 - 9 I asked my mum to buy me a tape, it was either S club, Nsync or Backstreet Boys, I played about 5 seconds of it at home before everyone in the whole house teasing me became to much to handle and I stormed off to my room. It kept happening for about a week.

I didn't listen to music voluntarily again for about 5 years. 🤣

I wonder if that's why I never really enjoyed that sort of music again, if so then thank you family. 😁

Music was everywhere when I was a kid... so I can't really pin it one single person or event (although it definitely WASN'T anything to do with my mum or dad)

Here are some of the ones I think I owe the most to..

My brother was on the first wave of the punk scene back in the mid 70s and had lots of cool punk mates. They all used to congregate round our house and listen to their records. I loved the wall of noise and the bad attitude!!
(and so began a life time of sneering at ignorant lesser musical beings 😁 ).

The Jamaican dope dealers on the end of our terrace. They turned their house into speakers and constantly blasted out Dub and Ska. I always wished Denz was my dad, so thought if I got into the music it might make it so (it didn't)
(and so began a lifetime of wishing I was something that I am not 🧱 )

Tony Wilson and 'So It Goes' (and by extension some of the great TV shows of the late 70s/early 80s - OGWT, Tube, John Peel's radio show to name a few). Prime Time telly with my brother and his punk mates - -turned me onto how much dark music lurked in the corners of a once great industrial city and how happy it made me.
(and so began a lifetime of finding generally perceived miserable stuff as happy and uplifting 😕 )

Ash, my first boyfriend - older than me and infinitely cooler - He brought a lot of the recognised classics into our teenage love nest. Together we went on our own musical journey. We soaked up everything we could lay our hands (not as easy back then pre-internet). It was all about the music, the bands, the experience...
(and so began a lifetime of ... nah lets not go there ;))

Ah there were no doubt heaps more.

An even cursory glance at any of my charts will give you some idea of how many influences there were on my young mind (as well as the more recent influences on the old mind).

The comments are kind of my way of saying thanks! 😁

Once upon a time a man fucked a water bottle. This created the universe. The man who fucked a water bottle revealed himself to be Albummaster, who then created the internet. The water bottle became Abraham Lincoln who traveled in a time machine to 2009. He gave me beloved records. I loved all of them. He then traveled back in time to the Civil War when Americans fought over Mexicans in the Middle East. That is my story with music.
I remember all three of those. 'Gangsta's Paradise' was my shit back in the day. There was also a Coolio motivational jam called 'The Winner' from the Space Jam soundtrack which I LOVED. Found out later it sampled The Impressions' 'We're A Winner'. I've said it many times, but Curtis is up there with Dylan and Ghostface in my books. As for Shaggy, Hot Shot was the album with 'Angel' and 'It Wasn't Me' and 'Dance and Shout' on it. That was my shiiiiiit. I'm not going to prove it, but trust me when I say I can do a banging Shaggy impression. After a few drinks.

I grew up on Dylan and the Grateful Dead and old punk and reggae records, via my dad. Then I became friends with people in Year 8 (age 12-13) who used to smoke weed and watch Channel U. Got into grime through that. First CD I bought was the Space Jam OST when I was 6. When I was 11, my dad took me to a record fair (remember them?) and bought me three CDs for my birthday: Hybrid Theory (Linkin Park), The Blueprint (Jay-Z), Hot Shot (Shaggy). I understand this isn't chronological. Started playing guitar when I was 13 too, which obviously leads you in all sorts of directions. Fuck knows, I'm just a boss. Fishscale (GFK) got me into hip-hop, but I couldn't really say why I bought that. Reviews maybe. Fuck knows, I'm just a boss.

This is an interesting old thread. My story is pretty simple: my mother's Dylan Tapes-"Killing me Softly"-The White Stripes-Funeral-first time hearing Joy Division-my first punk rock show-learning bass-first time hearing Tom Waits-going to a hilary hahn recital-working night shift with headphones permanently attached to my ears-hearing another green world-getting stuck in a small town for a few months-learning violin- to whereever the hell I am now.

Before that, I didn't even listen to music that much. My only supply was film musicals, whatever music I could fine in other films and such.

Then I found the 1001 series. You know, this series of books about 1001 things which you must do before you die. So there was this particular book in the series about songs, and I became interested in it. So I looked up the list on Listology and found that about that only songs I had listened to before were, predictably, Over the Rainbow, Singin' in the Rain, and Hound Dog in part (there may have been others, but I don't know). I'd heard of some of the bands before, like The Beatles, John Lennon, and....I guess, a few others too.

So here I am, and I choose Smells Like Teen Spirit and Johnny B. Goode for listening first. I find them on Youtube, start Teen Spirit first..............and it's amazing. Johnny B. Goode is also pretty good.

After this, I know I've found two of my fave songs: Teen Spirit.

Then I hear some others, like Respect, Bohemian Rhapsody, All the Young Dudes and Rock Lobster. (I also got pretty near to listening to BIG EYED BEANS FROM VENUS at that time. I don't know why, but I didn't listen to it. I didn't even search for it on Youtube. I think I was busy doing something else.)

And then I discover another list: RS's 500 Greatest Songs. I feel great. Not only have I found a whole list of 1001 great songs, now I also know the GREATEST ever. And I quickly listen to the top two songs.

Like a Rolling Stone instantly replaces Teen Spirit for best song. And I keep discovering more and more songs, and then I also become interested in the 1001 Albums and RS 500 Greatest Albums lists. And then I find this website. And then.............

The rest is history. A year ago I wouldn't have called myself even a casual music listener. I liked only movies and books.

Now I am a music fan too.

You should learn an instrument or something. Maybe you're a wonderchild
Probably harmonica or something. We will see.

My Dad listened to a ton of Led Zeppelin when I was very young. By about the age of 7 they were my favorite band, and I would listen to them non stop, the entire catalogue. So I started with the best. Then I just got into the rest of my favorite bands over time and exposure from older cousins mostly.

My Dad also had Ten by Pearl Jam in his collection, so I have him to credit for Pearl Jam as well.

Years 0-6: The Beatles - my dad was a huge beatles fan, had (and still has) all the original 45's & L.P.s, they were always playing on car journeys. Dire Straits played a concert that was televised on TV which I recorded, and i would also spend all my time watching that...
Years 7-10: 'American Grafitti' was (and still is) my fav. movie, i had the soundtrack on cassette and would listen to it endlessly. Found a Beach Boys 'Greatest Hits' double vinyl album amongst my parents records which i kept as my own and listened to when they weren't around (i wasn't allowed to touch their stereo!)
Years 11-12: Unfortunately for me it was 1988-89 so i caught the tale-end of the hair metal craze that was doing the rounds at school - Poision, Warrant, Def Leppard - at least it wasn't NKOTB or Bros tho! I also got my proper first albums for christmas on cassette: Inxs-X, AC/DC-Razors Edge & Faith No More-The Real Thing.
Years 13-14: Grunge came and saved mine, and everyone else's taste in music: Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, RHCP, Soundgarden, STP, Nirvana. I was also really into Van Halen as well...
Years 15-17: Still listened to all the Grunge/Alternative acts, but really started getting into Hip Hop in a big way - Souls Of Mischief, Del, Digable Planets, De La Soul, Gangstar, Guru...also developed a Jazz interest as well.
Years 18-23: Continued with all of the above, but after Mellon Collie came out, my main listen for the next few years was the Pumpkins. Also saw Pearl Jam play a few times, and while i was playing in a band, developed an addiction for R.E.M. as well....
Years 24-25: Arrived in UK, i felt that generally music - Rock/alternative and Hip Hop in particular - was kind of stagnant with nothing interesting really around. Starting buying ridiculous amounts of CDs - reading a lot of Music press and listening to genres of music i hadn't before - Funk, Electronic, D&B
Years 25-26: White Stripes, Strokes, BRMC were big and finally music was really exciting and interesting again. Went to a lot of concerts/festivals and generally if a band was playing somewhere, i'd go see them.
Years 27-now: started broading my music tastes more. Started listening to a lot more classic albums and artists from previous decades. Started searching out a lot of new artists as well that were a bit more underground. Discovered Black Keys around 2004, and developed a huge love of blues and started buying a lot of old artists (Eddie Cochrane, Rolling Stones back catalogue, Elvis, BB King to name a few). Still searching out classic and influential artists that i had heard of, but had never heard any of their music (Patti Smith, Stray Cats, Alice Cooper, Allman Brothers Band, Big Star, Joni Mitchell). I don't search out new music as much anymore, but keep up with latest releases from artists i like....

Music has a very important role in my family because every second person in my family is a piano teacher, or a pioneer in electronic music/componist in my country, or just a musical genius so I was grown up with good (mostly classical) music.

So I also played the piano and was sent to competitions etc. Unfortunately I stopped playing the piano at the age of 12 because I hated practising (with my teacher AND my mother) and then I had few "bad years" when I listened to tooo much pop music (end of 90s, early 00s). Those were the dark years in my life lol.

Then I realised I need music. Very good music.

I began to listen to more sixties music, later I have bought 1-2 CDs and fell in love with early Floyd, Jefferson Airplane, and many more sixties bands, and later progressive rock bands. That was about 8-9 years ago...

That's my story.

😲 We have a LOT in common.

I'm currently studying classical piano at a music conservatory. I wouldn't say I'm more than a mediocre pianist though, mainly due to technical problems (for about seven years 🙁 ), but I'm working on it.

My story is this: I didn't really like the music my friends were listening to, which lead me to classical music. I was listening pretty much exclusively to that up until a couple of years ago, when I discovered Radiohead, and decided to find out if there was more enjoyable music outside the classical world. So I was listening to music from the last decade or so, and sure, there was some nice music, but I found most of it to be crap. So I was almost ready to give up on non-classical music, when I "discovered" the 60's and the 70's (mainly pop from the former and prog from the latter).

When I've found out what music I like in rock music (and jazz eventually, I assume), I'm going to dedicate the rest of my life to exploring the endless amount of unbelievable music, referred to as "classical", and hopefully play a small fraction of it aswell.

We really do have! 😲

Please don't give up studying piano/playing piano! If you like it, DON'T GIVE UP. I didn't like it and I gave up and I was told that I'm going to regret it. And they were right.

That's so great that you discovered 60s and 70s music too. I think sooner or later you would have discovered non-classical classic rock (hehe) anyway, because people who are really interested in good music, they are constantly searching for/they are open for good music because they need it.
Oh and yes, I can understand how is it like when friends listen to very crap music. I was really suffering that everyone was listening to Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys (girls) Aqua and Scooter (boys) in my class, I felt like an alien in the class/among friends.

my story is a little odd.

my parents never listened to music or radio of any kind. My mom played piano for the worship band at our local church. That was my entire exposure to music until grade 9.

In grade 9 my parents got me an iPod at my request, and my friend put on it 4 songs.
Jesus Walks - Kanye West
Pieces - Sum 41
Santa Monica - Theory of a Deadman
Give It All - Rise Against

I loved everyone of those songs and they were all i knew. But my parents listened to Jesus Walks and weren't overly impressed so i lost my iPod.

But I wanted more music! so i raided the internet, specifically this site called purevolume where i could listen to music from all sorts of bands, mostly independent or samplers. However to please my parents i stuck primarily to christian rock. within a year I knew everything about christian rock and had over 50 cds.

this was what i listened to throughout High School. My favourites were The Classic Crime and Switchfoot.

In grade 12 my girlfriend introduced me to the arcade fire, sufjan stevens and vampire weekend and my world was changed. She let me borrow her cds and i would drive around town just to listen to them over and over.
But it wasn't until one night on purevolume that i came a cross a free mix. I was listening through it and it was nothing special until I heard the most incredible thing I have ever heard. Skinny Love rang in my head and gave me shivers up and down. I played it 36 times that night.

It was at that point my world opened I wanted more. If music could be that incredible it was all i wanted. I learned how to play guitar, drums, piano and anything i could in the next few years. I learned of bands like Beirut and fleet foxes and just haven't stopped since.

My cd collection is now close to 400 and it seems like it growing weekly.
