Man, I feel like such a dork for saying this, but....

My last girlfriend dumped me while Discovery by Daft punk was playing in my car. So now it sorta hurts to play such an amazing album.

69 Love Songs by The Magnetic Fields covers just about every stage and kind of romantic relationship one can conceive of, even some really weird imaginative scenarios. Also, I'm a big believer in "laughter is the best medicine" and many of these songs' lyrics have an irreverent sense of humor. The album, although laced with some filler due to its length, celebrates love and heartache while waxing philosophical about it and also laughing at the absurdity of it.

Others that come to mind:

If you're bitter about a breakup, Elvis Costello has written a number of amazing songs for that. I hope You're Happy Now and Man Called Uncle immediately come to mind.

Early Beatles and Beach Boys are good for infatuation and the early giddy stages of romance. Al Green, Marvin Gaye, and Barry White are good for the carnal side of love. For that desperately romantic Romeo and Juliet kind of love, There is a Light that Never Goes Out by The Smiths is hard to beat.

For wallowing in sadness, these albums come to mind:
1. Sea Change- Beck
2. After the Gold Rush- Neil Young
3. Blood on the Tracks- Bob Dylan

To me, I find the best music to listen to is music that had meaning to you during that period. You know, songs that had significance to you and the relationship. Songs like "Comptine d'un Autre Ete" by Yann Tiersan, "Lazarus" by Porcupine Tree and "Downtown" by Tegan and Sara all have undetachable links to specific moments in my life; the beauty of music, how we can use it as a "time machine" per se, to bring us back to happier (or in some cases, sadder) periods in our life.

I still get a little sad whenever I hear "Zero" by the Smashing Pumpkins, as that was me and my early-high school girlfriend's "song" (from the choice of song, I'm sure you can imagine what the relationship was like).

so, this thread was dedicated to anyone in any stage of a relationship posting music which reflected the stage in which they're at in a relationship (not just mine). As a side note, Cut Copy's In Ghost Colours and Love's Forever Changes best got me through my recent break-up, but I would like to hear other peoples' favorite albums that remind them of their significant others or stages they've gone through in a relationship
