I'm long past being cool. Lose Yourself is one of only five or so rap or hip hop songs I actually enjoy hearing, if played at moderate volume. I do like pretty loud rock, though.

ABBA is not a guilty pleasure for me, I think they're fantastic. I keep them among the really great 70s bands. Great songwriting, tight band, very personal sound... OK, they were never cool, especially not the boys, really goofy style and far away from rock'n roll. But nevertheless. Did I mention I'm Swedish myself? 😁

My pick would be "MmmBop" with Hanson Brothers... can't help bouncing up and down to that silly song. It's an OK album as well.

Seriously though, I completely disagree. Or maybe you've only heard highlights that are snippets of the actual compositions? (it is common to know Beethoven only by "best of compilations" and the like) Beethoven was among the supreme masters in developing his compositions into additional facets and extents far surpassing the previous norms, and the norms of his time. Pop music, by and large, marks an epitome of music that is minimally developed and "resolved" (with instant gratification choruses), with as little tension and compositional ingenuity as is necessary, so as to be assimilated and remembered without effort by the masses (that doesn't mean there aren't more extraordinary exceptions, but this is by far the majority).

[quote="bobbyb5"]Yeah, i dont believe in guilty pleasures either. Nowadays it doesn't mean what it used to a few years ago. A few years ago it meant something more like: liking something that was actually bad, but nowadays, especially among hipsters, it seems to mean liking supposedly disreputable genres entirely. Mostly pop or pop vocals.

I agree that it can be a way for hipsters to hate on genres, but at the same time we're all a bit guilty (well I am) of being surprised at other people's taste for things, music especially. If i asked someone who their favourite artists were and they said Justin Bieber, 1D and Chainsmokers, I would think 'God, there's so much more music for you out there to discover'. If they were a 14 year old girl, I'd think 'ok,you're still young and one day maybe you'll move onto other music in the future'. It's more surprising when I speak to people my age (I'm 22) and they won't even consider listening to 'older music' just for the sake of it being older.

I mean, this site is almost the antithesis of that. We all rate each other's charts based on how we feel about the music haha!

I don't feel guilty for anything I listen to. I have no guilty pleasures any more. I used to, but I somehow (I'm not sure how) got over it. And music that I do not find listenable diminishes daily. I've reached a point where I can find something to enjoy in everything I listen to. I used to be closed minded about so much music...now I'm not.

I'm reaching some kind of musical zen. I love it.
But I love Karen Carpenter. And Dan Fogelberg is one of my favorite artists. Also can't get enough of some John Denver (Rocky Mountain High, Looking for Space, Calypso). Ditto Jim Croce's more tender songs (Time in a Bottle, Operator).

along with Rocky Mountain High I also love Take Me Home Country Road by John Denver Those are two great hits right there.
