So, it turns out that the best album of he past two months is a re-recording of an album from 2011. That's okay, even karmic, since the best album of 2011 was a re-recording of an album from 1967. It may have skewed the results, since the original album already had a following.

I'd never heard of the band, and I hadn't added an entry to this diary in awhile, so I gave it chance. There were some good moments, I like the epicness of 'Beach Life In Death' and 'Famous Prophets'. The harmonies were I have to admit it's the best album I've heard from 2018; but this the third one I've heard, so not a lot of competition.

I didn't love it, I didn't hate it. It was fun it spots ('Bodys') and really dull in spots ('Twin Fantasy (Those Boys)') Maybe it will grow on me, or maybe I'll check out the original (although Spotify doesn't make a distinction, and I had to do a bit of research to make sure I was actually listening to the 2018 version).

Pretty bland, I'm afraid. The drumming is unusually good, but the music is typical mello 2010's stuff, nothing we haven't heard from many other bands by 2013. There are elements of Surf, and Big Band, and even Disco, but not enough of this seasoning to make it interesting.

A few songs I liked, (Black Spot, Breakers and Wooly Mammoth). Wooly Mammoth especially is rich in harmonies and stellar drumming.

Not much else to say, I guess.
BEA Ranks: 19th of 2015; 219th of 2010s; 2200th of All Time
Ranked highest by: dkarbo97 (4th of All Time)

Alex is a guy I work with, a fan of psychedelic music. We've exchanged recommendations, played albums for each other in our musically-relaxed place of work. Ten minutes ago, he came up to me and handed me a piece of paper, that said "Everything Everything. Get to Heaven". "You've got to hear this album, it's going to blow your mind." he said.

My first impression is: Rhythm-driven music behind some impressive vocal gymnastics. By the third track, I knew I would want to hear the album a second time. The album is musically dense in the way that Reflektor (2013) is. Lots of instruments, doing lots of things, and lots of voices working harmonies and counterpoints in all sorts of ranges. It all blends together seamlessly and the overall effect is beautiful.

It seemed like every song, I'd be thinking, "What do I think of this song? Should I Like this on my Spotify account?" Then the band would kick it up a notch. "Yes, that's a Spotify-Like."

After a really strong beginning, the tempo slows a bit in the middle, and it goes from super-awesome to just really good. It bounces back to super-awesome with Hapbsburg Lipp, which has a powerful riff, great vocals, operatic instrumentation, and yodeling. It maintains that high quality through the rest of the album, and then you get a special treat with the instrumental called "Yuppie Supper"

😁 😁 😁 TILLY AWARD! 😁 😁 😁

Listmeister Ranks: 2nd of 2015; 8th of 2010s. Might be in the Top 100, will need more listens to be sure.

Thanks, Alex.

My wish list has been accumulating for almost five years, and it's been growing faster than I've been listening to the albums on it. Now it's up to almost 600 albums, total. It seems that back in November, 2013, I added this Waterboys album to my wish list. Don't remember why, and I have no idea who the Waterboys are.

Whoever recommended this to me back in 2013, thank you. This is a really good record. Songwriting and musicianship are both top notch. Vocal harmonies about. There is a Big Band-ish kind of grandness to these songs. "The Whole of the Moon" was the hit from the album. That is, it was a hit in the UK, and probably deserved better than #27. It did not crack the US Billboard charts.

BEA Ranks: 6th of 2015; 63rd of 2010s; 735th of All Time
Ranked highest by al132 (2nd of All Time)

This is her debut album. She has potential, but she has not quite mastered her craft. Her guitar playing is excellent, almost flawless; and the rest of the band is pretty good, but they're not always together. Her vocals, sung with an English-accented sensitivity (she's really Australian, but the accent sounds English to me), are delightful to listen to if you are a sucker for an English accent (as I am), except sometimes her vocals are off-pitch. It sounds like it is recorded in a small studio, it has that bathroom-tile reverb quality throughout.

On the other hand, she is an excellent songwriter. Her lyrics hook you in, and they are clear the first time you hear the album. Regarding the aforementioned off-pitchy vocals, she does not let musical precision get in the way of expressing the lyrics she's trying to say. Get a load of this:

Quote:

"Taxidermied kangaroos are littered on the shoulders / A possum Jackson Pollock is painted in the tar
Sometimes I think a single sneeze could be the end of us / My hay-fever is turning up, just swerved into a passing truck"

That's some really good word-smithing, right there.

Listmeister Ranks 11th of 2015 (out of 14), 47th of 2010s

Yeah, I love this album. it's a grower too. Don't know how many times you've listened to it yet, but it has staying power. Her debut EPs are great too. So sing them too if you get the Courtney bug.

Loving this diary. Listmeister. Keep it up! 😁

That will teach me not to post before I've heard an album all the way through. The album got better in the second half. Maybe it's just that my ears adjusted to the band's style, but the tunes got catchier or something.

So, instead of putting in my "unranked" pile of albums I would be okay with never hearing again, I am forced to say, yes, I would like to hear this again at some point. I'm ranking it 20th out of 20 from 1999, but it's better than nothing. You won me over, Dismemberment Plan.

Glad you ended up liking it more. The first time I heard this I wasn't quite sure what to think because some of the songs are a little spastic like you said. What really got me to come back and continues to be my favorite part of this album are the lyrics, which were really impactful for someone who had just graduated college and was out on their own for the first time. All of the Plan's stuff is sort of emo for people in their mid-20s, and the fact that they have really fun and unpredictable music is just the icing on the cake. I agree the vocals take some getting used to, but when he uses them well (like on the climax of The City) they just can't be beat in my book.

Emergency & I is obviously my favorite of theirs because it's so adventurous, but their follow-up is also really good and is more similar to your typical indie/alternative rock. It's a little more restrained, the vocals are calmer for the most part, and the lyrics are still really great. You might want to check that one out too, this is one of the better songs from it:
Soft vocals, soft music. Really good harmonies. And they know how to intensify the music at just the right moment in the song to punctuate the message.

"Grounds For Divorce", which is apparently the hit from the album, is really good, how-have-I-never-heard-of-this-before good. "An Audience with the Pope" is a catchy tune, with a Mediterranean quality. "Weather to Fly" has airy harmonies. "The Fix" sounds like it belongs in a noir style Broadway show. I know I've heard "One Day Like This" somewhere before.

An enjoyable album. Listmeister ranks: 6th of 2008, 46th of 2000s

It's hard for me to put recent artists into historical context. Father John Misty sounds to my ears like a throwback to the singer-songwriter style of 1970ish-1985ish. Of course the "Guy with a musical instrument" genre has always been around, and probably always will.

"Another white guy in 2017 who takes himself so goddamn seriously" is a line from "Leaving LA". He knows he's being a bit pretentious, but he has a sense of humor about it. The truth is, he is a really good songwriter, and a really good singer. When he has something to say, he can craft a really good song about it. The humor in the lyrics is laughing gas, because he knows this is going to hurt a little bit. And then, what he has to say is, essentially, "Believing in anything is stupid." Including that thing YOU believe in. I don't have a lot of patience for this sort of nihilism.
This was a delightful discovery. The Monks (the The is optional) were an American rock band that came together in Germany, that is, the members of it were Americans, G.I.'s stationed in Germany.

This is not The Monkees. Or Thelonius Monk. Or Alvin and the Chipmunks, for that matter. It sounds like music from a parallel universe in which Punk happened 15 years earlier, started in 1962ish and had five years of Punk Music scene in which the music had time to evolve a little bit. The attitude is Punk, the music is on the border between Garage Band and Psychedelic.

That "five years of Punk music evolving" remark would place this right at the same spot in the timeline as The Minutemen, reviewed earlier. [WARNING: Both of these are bands who, until a week ago, I had never heard of, and my speculation about their genre is bound to be 80% wrong]. The difference is, the vocals do not conflict with the music. It's not like you want them to shut up so you can hear the music, their vocals are an important part of the music, which, by itself, is just garage-band plonking. There is just as much complaining here (well, maybe not as much -- the Minutemen were trying for a complaints-per-album-side record or something), but it never gets in the way of the sound.

I've never heard a 60s album that was so blatantly opposed to the Vietnam War. This came out in March, 1966, when Ballad of the Green Berets was number one for five weeks, so protesting Vietnam was a ballsy thing to do. It cost them. They recorded a couple of singles after that, but Black Monk Time was the only LP that ever saw the light of day.

Listmeister ranks: 13th of 1966 out of 18; 102nd of 1960s.

"Sampling" is the process by which bits of sound are pulled from other peoples records, news reports, TV shows, movies, whatever, and incorporated into your own record. This is what Steinski does.

Wikipedia wrote:

Double Dee and Steinski is a duo of hip hop producers, composed of Doug "Double Dee" DiFranco and Steven "Steinski" Stein. They achieved notoriety in the early 1980s for a series of underground hip-hop sample-based collages known as the "Lessons".

Although they never had a hit record, they proved highly influential for subsequent artists...

So, that's Steinski. They use these samples to construct a musical story, often around some theme or historical event. It grabs you, and you want to know what's going to come next.

They didn't event sampling. Buchanan and Goodman used it for comic effect as far back as 1956. But I've never heard it used more effectively.
Pescado Rabioso is an Argentinian rock band. Like a lot of pop music in the early 70's, you can hear a lot of Beatles influence going on. However, the sound is more guitar-heavy, and in fact, some of the best acoustic guitar I've ever heard.

The vocals are a soft baritone, pleasant to listen to. I don't know nearly enough Spanish to be able to follow what they're singing about. Overall the sound is fairly mellow.
From the very first sounds, a starting car, serious bass notes, pounding drums, you know you are in for a ride. This is a dense album, with 45 tracks in 74 minutes. (Average song length of 1:39). You have a punk intensity here, you also have some jazz mellowness on tracks like 'Cohesion' and 'It's Expected I'm Gone'.

From song to song, you don't know what you're going to get. A fun rock and roll piece (Corona, Dr. Wu)? A punk complaint about something (West Germany)? A Jazz Fusion piece (No Exchange, Love Dance, Cohesion), or something completely weird (You Need the Glory).

Actually, most of the songs fall under the Punk Complaint heading, or else they will start as one of the other things and turn into a Punk Complaint. Any individual one may be a valid concern, a point that needs to be made, but it seems that with the huge number of songs (and therefore, complaints), it gets wearying after awhile. The album seems a lot longer than it actually is. The ride turns out to be a road trip to Cleveland stuck in a car with a political activist, who, luckily, occasionally shuts up and lets you listen to the music.

Listmeister Ranks: 12th from 1984, out of 16.

'Mirrors' starts out with some mellow, vaguely Tex-Mex-y guitars, then it explodes into full bore, choking-throated Heavy Metal with Obfuscation, the second track. This is followed by 'Disease, Injury, Madness', which starts out pleasantly mellow, and then the guitars come in, and then the choking throat again. (I'm sure there's a more technical term than 'choking-throat vocals', please enlighten me if you know what it is) Anyway, the album goes on like that.

'Desert of Song' lacks the closed-throat vocals, and is a really moving song.

It is hard for me to think of the choking-throat vocals as singing, at least by the narrowest definition of the word 'singing'. The vocalist (Tommy Giles Rogers) doesn't seem to be varying the pitch to produce a tune (which is what singing is). I know it's hard to do that within the closed-throat singing style of the genre, but other bands have managed it. On the other hand, the music produced by the rest of the band is wonderful, energized and varied. I could rank this album very highly if I could get past the vocals.
Really amazing heavy-metal guitar work. My favorite thing about metal is the guitar work, and whoever is playing the guitar here --

Wait a minute. Let me do a little bit of research. Coheed and Cambria's guitars are Claudio Sanchez and Travis Stever. Sanchez wrote much of the music. He and Stever go back and forth being leads on guitars, sometimes, and here's where it gets amazing, they duel, approaching lethal notes-per-second ratios.

Even when they get balladic (like on 'Far'), the guitars and the vocals harmonize really well. The vocal range is dead-on with the notes of the guitars they are playing. Whether by design or accident, it blends into an awesome sound.

I did something for this album that I hadn't done before in this "Bands I've Never Heard Of Before" quest. I went back and listened to another Coheed and Cambria album after the first one.

I found this one also very enjoyable, but it relies more on piano than guitars. Also very good.
