I feel like we should also be paying some dues to the 70s band who arguably influenced REM more than any other: Big Star. They would be an asset to anyone's growing collection!

Being from Ottawa, I have had a full pass for Bluesfest every year since I can remember,
and this song is great. Although I actually love the festival, I understand where he's coming from as there always seems to be some sort of problem every year. I enjoy all of the albums I've picked up from them so far..
Murmur, Life's Rich Pageant, Document, Out Of Time, Automatic For The People, Monster

I also just recently grabbed these two but haven't given them a listen yet.
New Adventures in Hi-Fi & Around The Sun

From the above I think I'd have to pick Out Of Time to be my favourite, with Low being the standout track for me.

Also thanks to everyone who has posted in here, I'm going to check all of these suggestions out!

I still love R.E.M., but I went through a phase where I would listen to two albums of theirs a day - and virtually nothing else.

The kind of thing you're looking for definitely depends if you're enjoying IRS, Warner Bros, Post-Berry R.E.M. the most. I'd say first, if you're enjoying R.E.M., just listen to more R.E.M.. Unless you've literally exhausted their entire catalogue, I think there's still something valuable in every of their studio albums. I'm still changing my opinions about which are my favourites, and discovering that some of their 'worst' albums have become the ones I enjoy most (except Around The Sun, which I still recommend, but it's pretty terrible).

The two bands that really scratched that R.E.M. itch for me back then were Suede and Elbow. Elbow for that mellow, grandmother-would-approve, melodic side of R.E.M., and Suede for those darker, more cynical tones.

If you're looking for more acoustic-rock, Sun Kil Moon and Red House Painters are a good next try, if you haven't done so already. Especially these two, which I've since come to love perhaps more than any R.E.M. record:

lol. Yeah, Anal Diary doesn't sound very fun. My diary is far cooler than that! lol

anyways, Guadalcanal Diary's sound is heavily influenced by REM, and the most like REM I've heard. Will have to check that For Squirrels album though. I LOVED early REM right up until Green. Green's sort of where they lost me. That Shiny Happy People is my version of hell. that and that Stand song. I hate those songs. lol

Do you want recent things or more classic choices?
I was just thinking the other day that the National are kind of the new REM. They have a new album out this month. Think you might like them based on those preferences. War on Drugs also have a nice take on melodic but wide-screen stadium sized rock that you might like. Think they also have a new one out at the moment. 😄
