One of my favourite genres, although really underrated in my chart and on this site.

Haven't seen mentions of
- The Album Leaf
- Caspian
- Crippled Black Phoenix
- Mono
- Red Sparowes
- Tides From Nebula

All superb bands.

I've heard their first 3 and they're all more than worth listening to. Possibly my favourite post-rock group.

My friends and I all adore post-rock, it's such an exhausting genre of music to listen to. GY!BE, Sigur Ros, Slint, Tortoise, and Mogwai are my favorites.

I can see why so many people hate it, and honestly I just think it's their lose frankly

Slint and Talk Talk are the grandfathers of post-rock, and also the best bands that may be considered post-rock in my opinion. It's definitely not a genre to be discounted, think of it as the '90s/'00s American/Canadian krautrock. Also GARY, just because something is labeled 'post' doesn't mean that the before 'post' thing had to die; e.g. post-punk popped up within a year of punk and punk still continued. And once again, New Grass is one of the most beautiful things ever recorded

No one said they destroyed rock

I guess SOME people just thought it was a natural progression from rock into something else. besides they were influenced by plenty of "rock" bands

Maybe they should have called "rock" post blues

Well, I don't think post-rockers would say they are anti-rock. Groups like Mogwai use rock instrumentation. The "songs" tend to be instrumental though and don't always have a clearly defined structure to them like rock songs. You should check some out and tell us what you think. So should I, for that matter, so I can have have a more well-formed opinion. To me though, post rock is sort of like impressionist paintings. It's not well-defined.

Well Wikipedia refers to them as post rock and I think they are.

Although your description seems pretty accurate of there work.

@mooseboy, I haven't really associated Slint with post rock as much as the others I listed

I haven't heard those first three. I've heard Stereolab, but I never thought of them as fitting into that genre. I just think of them as sort of an ambient elecro pop kind of group. Emperor Tomato Ketchup is a good album. Have they evolved over the years into something else?

I admit though that my knowledge of the genre is not extensive, so don't take my opinion too much to heart. I've heard good things about Slint for years and someone put a song on a compilation tape that I think I liked. Aren't they considered sort of the godfathers of the genre?

I've never been a big fan of the genre. I followed Mogwai briefly in the mid-late 90's. Incidentally, they are one of the loudest bands I've ever seen/ heard live. Maybe Mogwai is not the ultimate representatives of the genre, but I've also listened briefly to Tortoise (saw them live once too) and God Speed. To me, post rock is sort of like musical wallpaper. It's nice to have on in the background or to take naps to, but I don't really want to actively listen to it. The live band aspect of it, such as in the case of Mogwai, is not that far removed from the jam band aesthetic, in that post rock bands don't really play songs, they play jams and there are musical themes that seem to repeat, but post rock songs don't seem well crafted... Correct me if I'm wrong. The genre is way more abstract in that sense than straight up rock or pop. I don't know. It's OK, I suppose, but I'd choose The Decemberists or The Shins or The National over any post rock group any day of the week. I also think the genre name, "post rock" is kind of stupid. I'm sure some music journalist probably coined the term. They have to call it something, I suppose.
