Here is some of what you may been missing since the 80's:

Jason Isbell Listen to anything he's recorded in the last decade since going solo in 2007. Maybe the best current songwriter out there right now.

Lucero A Memphis band with some great songs, a growly voice, and some mean guitar.

The Steeldrivers: Two albums: The Steeldrivers and Reckless. These feature Chris Stapleton pre-Traveler (which I find to be a huge disappointment)...but with this awesome band, he's a monster.

Trampled By Turtles - Bad name, great band. Check out pretty much anything they've done.

Whiskeytown - Especially Strangers Almanac. Ryan Adams in a more controlled environment, great songs.

Ryan Adams - Be careful which albums you pick...but you can't go wrong with Heartbreaker and Cold Roses.

Uncle Tupelo - Jay Farrar (Son Volt) and Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) started here. This is the definition of alt-country. Anodyne is their best work.

Son Volt - Sometimes a little tough to get through...but all of their albums have great rewards.

Wilco - Especially the first two albums...after that, they veer away from alt-country.

Nice one. A genre I keep meaning to check out more so this will do. I have heard next to nothing in this genre but an album I've listen to a handful of times this year that I highly recommend is this one

Right now I am watching a TV programme called Sisters in Country all about the famous trio of Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. I knew Dolly's music but I didn't know much (no pun intended) about Linda Ronstadt or Emmylou Harris. Vocally they sound terrific together. Plus I am finding out their solo stuff is pretty good too. I knew Emmylou Harris from her work with Gram Parsons. Linda Ronstadt , I only knew her from a handful of her most famous songs. They all have amazing voices.

Anybody ever notice that all current modern- country singers are nothing but models? All the male singers look like models for a cowboy hat catalog, and all the women look like models for a women's Western Wear catalog. And they sing like it too. 😐

Yeah those were both fucking awesome. All Linda Ronstadt albums had a couple pretty good country covers on them. But all her albums immediately before Heart Like a Wheel were almost like country albums. Heart Like a Wheel is when she crossed over to mainly rock, but albums like Silk Purse were more heavily country and she was pretty good at picking good country songs

I totally agree with everyone you just named. Jerry Reed Chet Atkins Roy Clark. I have albums by all of them and they are endlessly listenable and enjoyable. And this just proves my original point that it's been decades since country has produced anything that comes close to being more than mediocre.. there's a few more guitarists I would add to that group too. And a few more singers also. The New Traditionalist Movement failed to produce anything worthwhile. And Alt-Country sounds great in theory but in practice it's just awful. There's not even an equivalent to the pretty good Country-Rock of the seventies.

Well, I was exaggerating a little bit. There were a couple Alt-country bands I liked years ago. Like Son Volt and a few others. But the point is, if it's a Rock/Country hybrid you want, all the Southern Rock and Country-rock albums of the 70s are still in print, not to mention the Byrds. And those albums are 100 times more exciting as anything alt-country has produced.
