Actually you're right. There are lots of examples. And now that I think about it, it wasn't the first time she covered her own songs. A Natural Woman was recorded by Aretha Franklin first, and Goin Back was recorded by The Byrds before she recorded it. But those covers turned out fantastically. And the Beatles recorded Chains long before she did. If I thought about it there's probably tons of artists who covered their own songs. I can think of Neil Young and Joni Mitchell right now and I'm sure there is a lot more.

You should make a new thread for songs recorded more than once by a same artist (I think of West End Girls)

Here's an unusual case. Is it possible for a artist to do a cover of their own song? Or would it be called something else?
Case in point. One of my favorite writers and musicians is Carole King. But in 1980 she recorded her own song The Locomotion, a great song which is actually the only song in history to be a Number One hit three separate times. By Grand Funk Railroad, Kylie Minogue, and Little Eva. But Carole King's version is absolutely painful for me to listen to. She didn't like recording her own oldies and it shows. It's the worst cover version I've ever heard.

Hilary and Haylie Duff absolutely slaughtered the Go-Go's "Our Lips Are Sealed." It's amazing what a difference vocals can make in making a song either soar or fall flat.

P.S. What burns me even more is the fact that my least favorite member does the leading for each of the re-doings. I have seen plenty of clips and while I will admit that the man does have a moment here and there, for the most part, I find myself wishing that he was in the closet all tied up and gagged because he comes off way too much as an annoying obnoxious nuisance who just has to be the center of attention at all times. 🧱 🧱 🧱

Come on, now.. that might not be Boney M best, but their covers of Heart of Gold, King of the Road, Brown Girl in the Ring are absolutely delightful. It's one of the best albums of the 70s.

This is kind of weird, but there was a cover of Free Bird and Baby I Love Your Way in the early 90s that everyone was saying was the worst thing they ever heard in their life. And I don't agree. I loved it. I think the girl sang it really awesomely, and I just loved the whole thing . I don't know, what can I say? So I'm just saying this preemptively just in case someone here calls it the worst cover ever.
