Exactly, Whenever I turn on the radio and hear the end portion of layla, I am very happy about it.

Most classics actually make perfect sense to me, but that likely means I see classics differently.

To me, the classics are often the bread and butter of music. It's the easy to digest, yet emotionally and mentally captivating.

To a electronic music geek, Stockhausen is a classic. But I'd disagree. Pivotal and great and important, but not classic as not bread and butter.

LordMark wrote:

"Layla"

I cannot stand that whiny guitar riff, and the song drags on for 7 freaking minutes. Now, before you Eric Clapton fans eat me alive, please keep in mind that "Sunshine Of Your Love" and "White Room" are 2 of my favourite songs ever recorded.

🤣

Luckily for me I'm too young and my parents really aren't the classic rock types (more hippie), so the 7 minute version I was spared from. I agree it's pretty terrible.

But I did get into music in the 90s, so the acoustic version is what I heard first and I actually dig it. Yes it doesn't have the "amazing guitar" part, but is by far a much better arrangement of the song (imo). Actually I like this unplugged album more than any other Clapton album. His voice sounds better with these arrangements. I don't think he's that great of a blues singer (blasphemy?)...

Funny enough I absolutely adore Sunshine and White Room... but they actually are more attributed to Jack Bruce than Clapton according to wikipedia.

Oh it still gets lots of radio and shopping play in the states too.

There's an odd time or two when I actually like the song enough to let it play on the radio, but mostly I have this gag reflex.

Hmm... anything by Led Zeppelin. I'll qualify that and say that I enjoy their music quite a bit - they're very good musicians. But its all a bit overhyped for me, personally. Feels pompous and kind of lacking in real warmth. They've got some good songs though, for sure.

Wonderwall? Don't you mean the full house theme song?

I think Oasis started off with a bang, with a bunch of good ones on their first album. But then it was immediately all over. I didn't like anything on their second album. Or afterwards either.
Fake Plastic Trees. Radiohead
Hotel California. Eagles
Hurt. Nine Inch Nails
There is a Lght that Never Goes Out. The Smiths
Heroin. Velvet Underground
Fake Plastic Trees. Radiohead

Sublime. But you wouldn't expect to see it next to What A Wonderful World in a list of classic songs

Hotel California. Eagles

Bit overplayed maybe but I can understand why it's considered a classic

Hurt. Nine Inch Nails

nine inch what lol

There is a Light that Never Goes Out. The Smiths

An anthem. A classic anthem by The Smiths but hardly up there as an all-time great
Heroin. Velvet Underground

A good VU song but that's about all
It's not that I think the Smiths don't have any classic songs. I think How Soon Is Now, This Charming Man, hand in glove, big mouth, and a couple others are great. And a few Morrissey solo songs as well.

The Smiths : "This Charming Man"
Morrissey : "The First of The Gang to Die" (not really a classic)

My choice would be Wonderwall by Oasis. I like many of their songs but that one is a moaning-faced dirge.

I wrote that before reading page 2 of this thread. I didn't know it had already been selected. Great minds and all that. I love Don't Look Back in Anger and She's Electric but dislike Wonderwal.

And I agree that Fake Plastic Trees is one of Radiohead's best songs. Sorry Bobby! My favourite of theirs is Let Down.

I think Hurt by NIN/Johnny Cash is a good song in terms of melody and emotion but the lyrics are incredibly depressing. And considering it was Johnny Cash's swansong that is very sad, that he had such a bleak outlook on life just before he died.
There are many others but can't think right now

Although I can't understand why Suspicious Minds is one of Elvis's most popular songs. I prefer Can't Help Falling in Love and Mystery Train.

Also the lyrics to In My Life are great but the tune is decidedly average. Strawberry Fields takes the cake for me every time.

Do forgive me for being an opinionated old thing!
Fake Plastic Trees. Radiohead
Hotel California. Eagles
Hurt. Nine Inch Nails
There is a Lght that Never Goes Out. The Smiths
Heroin. Velvet Underground

Fake Plastic Trees. Radiohead

Sublime. But you wouldn't expect to see it next to What A Wonderful World in a list of classic songs

Hotel California. Eagles

Bit overplayed maybe but I can understand why it's considered a classic

Hurt. Nine Inch Nails

nine inch what lol

There is a Light that Never Goes Out. The Smiths

An anthem. A classic anthem by The Smiths but hardly up there as an all-time great

Heroin. Velvet Underground

A good VU song but that's about all
