It's a different one. The one at the beginning is the crystal ball of the fortune teller guy. And the one at the end is the crystal ball of the wicked witch.

I wouldn't know how to decide which is the actual best movie scene of all time, but I could tell you the ones that worked most effectively on me. The scenes near the end of The Wizard of Oz in which Dorothy first looks into the crystal ball and sees her home and relatives, and then as she cries as The Hourglass is running out of sand and she grows ever more desperate and upset. And actually just the whole scene at The Witches Castle. Everything about it. The castle itself, the soldiers, the flying monkeys, and of course the witch herself. Just everything about it worked so effectively on me. And still does.

Animation? Sure, why not? The opening montage of Up comes to mind despite the rest of the movie sucking. And yeah the list goes on and on which is why this kind of a silly thread because there are far too many to name. But hey, if you're really into movies, check out the Westerns poll that's currently running:
I honestly have not seen Road to Perdition since 2003 (15 years ago, holy shit, that was half my life ago, I'm getting old) which was probably the #1 year in my life in regards to how many movies, new and old, that I watched for the first (and many for the last) time. Although I really enjoyed it, I was young and feel I didn't fully appreciate the cinematography like I would now. Need to give it a rewatch asap.

Regarding Chaplin, all of his best films have that killer scene that just tug at my heart strings like no other. Whether its an uplifting ending or a mid-film crisis such as The Kid being taken away or the tramp being locked up. But likewise he has so many scenes that just bring me so much joy through laughter. The boxing match in City Lights; the cocaine in Modern Times; Big Jim getting hungry in The Gold Rush. That's why he's the GOAT

Well while we're selecting closing scenes to Chaplin movies, do not downplay the finale of The Circus, equally powerful as the two aforementioned scenes:

Link

@AwaitingAndrew

That scene from Road to Perdition is fan-freaking-tastic. However I didn't pick that one because I didn't want to spoil the ending to those who haven't seen it.

Here's another classic scene:

Link

The comments about Charlie Chaplin and Road to Perdition have reminded me of my love of two of my absolute favorite scenes:

Chaplin's speech in The Great Dictator is still as relevant and inspiring nearly 80 years later.

Link

And I have always adored Conrad L. Hall shot rain scenes, and this one in combination with Thomas Newman's score and Paul Newman's final onscreen film (aside from lending his voice to Cars) after a life well lived in film gets my pick for his best.

A couple more (music-related) scenes I thought of:

Donald O'Connor's "Make 'Em Laugh" routine from Singin' in the Rain.

The part where Julie Andrews comes back singing to the children in The Sound of Music (let me guess, I'm 16?)

Bob Geldoff's breakdown in Pink Floyd - The Wall during "One of My Turns" (this film features quite a few of my favorite scenes).

Tina Turner's "Acid Queen" from Tommy.

Hey now, SPR is excellent! No shame in loving more than any other film, even if I'd rank about 50-100 movies over it. I love it.

As for me, I suppose Fredo's pre-assassination plea to his brother is one that always blows me away. Also I love the last scene of Casablanca for obvious reasons. The Christmas party scene in The Apartment with Buddy Boy's new hat and Ms. Kubeleck"s broken mirror. Also the final scene of The Apartment with the champagne scare and the continuation of cards and the greatest closing line ever.

Apu's father's death in Aparajita, or the post-wedding awkwardness and conversation of The World of Apu/Apur Sansar.

Link

The goodbye in Lost in Translation makes me cry every time with sadness and happiness and other feelings uncatalogued. The goodbye in Brief Encounter (both the one at the beginning and especially the end.

Every interaction between Clive Candy and Theo in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. But especially the moment when Candy congratulates Theo and Edith on their engagement. "Clive, my English is not very much but my friendship for you is very much." *tears*... also the fucking build up to their Duel is just pure cinematic genius in every way... here they are...

when they meet in the duel (okay, couldn't find the whole 8 or so minutes. But this is a good portion of it for a promo in 2012...

Link

And I can't find the "...friend very much" scene darn. Watch the whole movie if you haven't. As of now its number 2 or 3 all time. Right there with the Apartment, The World of Apu/The Apu Trilogy, The Before Movies, and When Harry Met Sally as my favorites ever ever.

As mentioned, the last scene of City Lights may very well be the greatest of them all.

The first marathon pool game between Fats and Fast Eddie in the Hustler is just sustained brilliance.

Oh shit going more recent, I think the scene that whenever I saw it made me cry due to its power was from "Room" when Jacob Tremblay's Jack escapes in the back of the truck. I timed my theater sound and visual checks at the theater at the time so that i saw that scene. Saw it about 20 times.

Oh and I can't NOT mention the Before Movies and When Harry Met Sally! The before movies are just sustained conversations, so not many scenes come to mind. The argument in Before Midnight is 10 minutes. which feels like 30, of sheer excruciating pain. And the similar rhyming or echoing awesomeness of the music listening booth scene in "Before Sunrise and then the similarly touching (probably due to how it reminds me of 9 years earlier in the booth) of when Celine is leading the way up the stairs to her apartment and Jesse is following and they exchange looks in such a similar way... its like they're young again and in love. *swoon*

As for When Harry Met Sally, gee whiz, so much great stuff. But yeah I'm a softy and I love closing scenes taking place in romantic films set on New Years Eve AT or JUST AFTER the countdown to the new year... so the closing scene of When Harry Met Sally is tied with the closing scene of the Apartment as the greatest of these. There are others. Its a trope and a mighty great one.

okay that all.

Link

true story just watched this again and cried instantly. Its such a great moment! the mix of wonder from Jack's perspective which is proceeded by Jack's fear and panic. Him replaying his Mom's instructions. I don't know... i love this scene to my core.

While it's unrealistic to call any of them the "best" as they're aesthetically all the same, nothing ticks my boxes like a good old Sergio Leone final shootout.

While I've been known to say negative things about this film in the past, there's really nothing more intense than the post-escape discovery in The Silence of the Lambs, from the guard sacrificed on the cage to the ambulance reveal. Killer shit.

[insert just one of 50 Quentin Tarantino scenes so as not to look like a major fanboy]

But really, the best to me is the same film/man that's made #1 on like half a dozen of my lists already. The final scene in Chaplin's City Lights. I will cry every time, no matter who is around.

SquishypuffDave wrote:

David Thewlis' apocalyptic conversation with the security guard in Naked.
Yes, and David Thewlis end- times rant is forever preserved on The Orb's track S.A.L.T..
Although that's not my favorite movie scene of all time, the album that track is on is my favorite album of all time. It's the number one album in my top 100. And that track is obviously one of my favorites of all time.

That isn't the only time that Nicholas Cage had to cry at the end of a movie. The ending of 8 Millimeter, to me, was also a sad one.
