Very true. But Talking Heads and Marley are both 70s bands. And Daft Punk is 70s retro. They've made a career out of retro 70s nostalgia . Explicitly on Random Access Memories, but also on Discovery. And Wilco seems like retro country rock of the 70s.

You say you can't quite figure out what it is about those songs that they have in common despite being in different genres. I think I know what it is. The 70s was really the last golden age of songwriting in popular music. People still wrote good melodies, even in genres such as rock. Maybe you're used to listening to today's music which is utterly tuneless. Well, the songs technically have melodies, but they aren't any good. All of today's songs sounds like they were made up on the spot. Way back when people demanded a well-written song, which is why music of the past is so much more appealing then today's music. All those songs you named are highly tuneful. And they actually have hooks, which popular music demands.

The 70s were the funk decade, so the genre rubbed off on a lot of rock and pop back then. The later songs you list are still basically going for that 70s-early 80s sound. In the early 80s, The Talking Heads were heavily influenced by P-Funk and African music. Of course, reggae's related to funk.

The Daft Punk song has that slap bass sound of late 70s-early 80s R&B -- sounds a lot like Patrice Rushen's "Forget Me Nots."

Based on "This must be the place": "Genius of Love" - Tom Tom Club

Funky rock was Steely Dan's wheelhouse -- Yann's definitely onto something there. Some of the lighter ones:
Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Deacon Blues, Hey Nineteen etc.

Some other lightly funky rock/pop/R&B:

"Lowdown" - Boz Scaggs
"Long Train Runnin'" - Doobie Brothers
"Funkytown" - Lipps Inc.
"Jive Talkin'" - Bee Gees
"Fantasy" - Earth, Wind & Fire

Further examination of The Doobie Brothers' and Stevie Wonder's catalogs might bear some more fruit.

I focused on the terms catchy poppy and groovy. A lot of pop songs are not groovy, those ones are, in my opinion

I don't see where any of the songs you named are similar. I like them all but don't see much similarity. I would suggest any Rock Hits of the 70s album. There's tons of good ones. Especially the "Have a Nice Day" series. Theres about 20 or 30 volumes of them, all excellent. Any one that I've ever heard I loved. Of course, this is only if you like 70s music.

I’m working on a playlist of songs that are sonically similar to the songs below.

There is something similar in all below, I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is.
They’re very catchy, and poppy, but have a laid back groove.

These Eyes - The guess who
This must be the place - talking heads
Could you be loved - Bob Marley
Evil Woman - ELO
Jesus, Etc. - Wilco
Something about us - Daft punk

There are many more, I just can’t think of any right now. I’ll add as I come up with them.

I feel like whatever it is these songs share can be found not only in different decades, but different genres as well.

Let me know your thoughts.. can’t you come up with others?
