I much prefer Les Claypool side projects like Oysterhead or Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains to Primus.

RE: Foo Fighters, 5 or 10 years ago I would have disagreed with you and said Dave Grohl was very integral to Nirvana's success and Foo Fighters are totally in the same league. Since about 2007 though... they started a new chapter and are more a dadrock band. And still do pretty good at it (loved wasting light)... but yes, that quality of their music in the past decade takes them out of the league Nirvana was in. Up until about 2004/5 I'd argue at least in the same league, just not winning the Stanley Cup. But I put all those 90s alternative bands more or less in the same league. They all are in the same league of Nirvana, even if Nirvana nearly always won the World Series.

Same with The Doors. Or The Beatles. (RE: longevity of the band could effect overall opinion of them)

There is something to be said about bands like R.E.M., The Rolling Stones (albeit I don't like anything from 1980 to 2005 from them), and U2 (also last decade or so years have degraded them to average).

Having said that those bands put out above average music for roughly 2 decades, and U2 and Stones have the highest ever attended concerts (cultural impact still). And then the just came down to the rest of the schmucks putting out music (imo). Idk... that's probably an opinion I've formed recently. Yes their music "sucks" now, but what that often actually means is it just sounds like 80% of all the other (popular?) music produced out there.

Even if most have written those three off, they probably shouldn't be written off so badly - it's just cause they were so good at one point. It's a long way down.

Somebody DID say that. And they weren't wrong. Nirvana had 3 good tracks all together, all on their first album and none after that.
Foo Fighters has put out several good tracks every few years. That makes them better.

Well, that's not spin off band, it's just someone going solo. Solo artists that are better than the groups they came from could be a whole thread of its own. And since going solo is far more common than legit spinooff bands, it should provide greater opportunity or discussion.

As to Lionel/The Commodores, Lionel certainly eclipsed the Commodores in sales, but I wouldn't say in actual music as the Commodores with Lionel were pretty diverse while Lionel without the Commodores was pretty much mainstream pop and balladry.

Think of it this way: The Commodores with Lionel could do Easy and Three Times a Lady, but Lionel without the Commodores couldn't do Brick House or Machine Gun. (and I say this as someone who really digs Lionel)

Band on the Run is pretty awesome. I think it's Ozzy Osbourne's favourite album of all time. I heard him say in an interview. And he is a big Beatles fan!
