while that's the most blatant example, i would argue that a huge chunk of the samples and lyrics she chooses (see: Locker Leak) are based on ASMR as well, though on a much more practical level.

It certainly sounds bunk if presented incorrectly, but it's sort of just the opposite of nails on a chalkboard. It's the pleasant version of that reaction you have. There're definitely certain sounds that elicit a response in me (cacophonic or harmonious). The tone, cadence, pitch... like the sound of a book's crisp pages turned in a cold, silent room, an open room with little or nothing to diffuse the subtle reverberation off the walls. Tip-tep-tapping on a loud, plastic keyboard in a stuffy little apartment. A woman's whisper panned to one ear. Or panned to-and-fro. This stuff is electric when it's used right. But even with those sounds, the environment has to be right, and most of the "asmr" stuff out there misses it completely for me.

In any event, I'm much more interested in the application than the theory. Holly Herndon's Platform expresses a nice gamut between extreme theory nonsense and glorious compositional integration. And while I'm not so fond of listening through the more extreme examples, I'm glad she explored it to its limits. If you're making electronic music today, and you're not taking notes on this ASMR phenomenon, I think you're missing out on some really cool creative opportunities. Like, say you want to create a harsh, distopian environment for your listeners - nails on a chalkboard would be a welcome sound in your little mix. But if you're going for that warm, soft cuddled in the fuzzy pink womb expression, a clear, hushed voice whispering crisp consonants in one ear just might help you create the atmosphere you're looking for.

Like Styrofoam grinding does the same thing sometimes, but it isn't pleasant at all... should it be?

I have indeed wondered why some music gives my a tingle/goosebumps though...

Is that the music itself or my projection of it? Rationalism vs Empiricism? Kant would argue both?

Eh, ASMR has been around the internet for awhile, equal parts as a meme, and as something that people are more serious about. I personally think it's bunk, just like those videos of sounds that are supposed to "get you high" through different frequencies.
I actually have a friend who travels to hospitals and the such playing the piano in therapeutic ways... like legit licensed therapist ways.
Search instagram for ASMR and there's a weird world of intentionally ASMR accounts, posting weird and wonderful things, from the sound of feet walking on snow, to chewing noises, to the cutting of soap.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_sensory_meridian_response

So, I just discovered ASMR is a thing.

"ASMR signifies the subjective experience of "low-grade euphoria" characterised by "a combination of positive feelings and a distinct static-like tingling sensation on the skin". It is most commonly triggered by specific acoustic or visual stimuli, and less commonly by intentional attention control."

Sometimes humans like to come up with terms to describe things, and perhaps those things always existed, but with the naming of things comes categorisation, and hence people start making dedicated ASMR recordings, when maybe other recordings functionally have been ASMR without even knowing what the hell ASMR is.

For instance, I think for as long as close mic'ing a voice has existed, it's been possible for a vocalist to whisper in your ear via your headphones or whatever, intimately.

Some common triggers:

- Listening to a softly spoken or whispering voice
- Listening to quiet, repetitive sounds resulting from someone engaging in a mundane task such as turning the pages of a book
- Watching somebody attentively execute a mundane task such as preparing food
- Loudly chewing, crunching, slurping or biting foods, drinks, or gum.
Receiving altruistic tender personal attention

Has anyone given this much thought in relation to music?
