He produced all kinds of 70s music, but he's probably most famous for turning a lot of female artists into big stars. That was only part of it though.
I don't think this is intended to be about quantity, or even who is the best. It's just a different way to think about albums, and a means of discovery if a Producer tends to get a sound you like. That was my intention, anyway.

I made this list, because I was listening to this...

Slave To The Rhythm by Grace Jones

Apparently Trevor Horn has been referred to as "the man who invented the 80's". I do remember that he produced the "Do They Know Its Christmas" single, and that's gotta be one of the worst songs of the 80's. "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" was pretty great. Frankie Goes To Hollywood is a case in point of a producer imposing his sound on a record. I found it pretty humorous that he produced Robbie Williams, "Reality Killed The Video Star", having been a Buggle when "Video Killed The Radio Star".

A lot of great sounds from the 70's were shaped by him.
Glyn Johns. Most notably for his work with rock and roll bands in the 70's. But his body of work is impressive, even though he took the 2000's off. A lot of great sounds from the 70's were shaped by him.
one of my favorites too. In fact, there are albums where he's the whole show. There's really nothing else going on on the album besides him, because the artist and the material itself wasn't all that great, and yet it's still a great album. that's how I knew he must be great. he's one of those producers who could take crap and turn it into gold.
It would be a hard thing to quantify, though. Producer, is such a slippery term. You could praise a producer for having a recognisable sound, or condemn them for forcing their sound on everything they do. Some producers' genius is purely in getting great performances out of an artist, and are otherwise invisible. Some are consistent, and some are shape-shifting over time.

Yeah, sometimes the best producers are the ones who have a very specific style and sound, and sometimes the best ones are the ones who didn't have any identifiable Style. I like a lot of both kinds. There's lots of both that I've always liked.

Sometimes big name producers with very identifiable sounds can overwhelm bands a bit. Nigel Godrich's work outside of Radiohead springs to mind. Dave Friedman when he's not producing the Flaming Lips. Maybe even when he is producing the Flaming Lips.

Very true. It's got to be a good matchup between producer and artist. With a certain type of artist, it's really appropriate to have the kind of producer who likes big extravagant productions with umpteen instruments. But some artists are better off with a producer who keeps it simple with just a few instruments.
