Listened to Maggot Brain today. Yeah, it was a bit trippy. Well, tequila is more like a drug than alcohol, so I was close. I will listen to the Funkadelic album you recommended tomorrow.

Haha, according to the leader, George Clinton, the whole band took acid before they recorded this.

Funkadelic's first three albums are all mash-ups of funk, soul and acid rock. Funkadelic's also practically the only funk/soul artist from the 60s and 70s that you could call experimental, though a majority of the time the music's funk, rock and soul.

Painful by Yo La Tengo

Here is exhibit A; my favourite album of all time. Though I could make a strong case for all five categories, I think it best plays to the fourth one. It’s romantic, but in a way that you’ve never heard before.

Trout Mask is an assault on the senses, but I would not recommend it for 5, though it could be slipped under Antisocial. 😄

Re: Trout Mask Replica ... Much much much more challenging than an album like Aeroplane, so no guarantees from me 😄 Dont be surprised if you find yourself better off going through a sequence such as:

(a) trying it for a bit (b) assimilating various other music, expanding horizons (c) returning to it and appreciating it a bit more (d) repeat

Hi Thad,

I am familiar with Sufjan Stevens’ Illinoise, and thought it quite remarkable when it came out. Is Adz better? I am listening to the Stone Roses and feeling pretty good (though not under the influence). Graceland is a great pick. I think Paul Simon is underrated and I love the way he incorporates musical styles fro around the world. The zydeco flavour of Graceland works particularly well. As crazy as this seems, I only discovered Modest Mouse recently. I am really enjoying The Moon and Antarctica but must get a copy of LCW. D’Angelo I will need to check out but it won’t make me a sex addict will it? Finally, no apologies necessary. You only get one go round. Do no harm, and your choices should be your own is my philosophy. Radiohead I know from The Bends but am starting to listen more and more-and loving it. The other music I haven’t listened to, so thanks for the recommends.
