Theyre both masterpieces of the genre by any reasonable estimation. Lorca, while not as diverse or bold/colorful instrumentally, is altogether more honed to an all-pervasive purpose. It takes his art to a singular extreme in focused, introspective intensity and inward yearning that reaches down deep to cull a monstrous blues immersed in an infinite sorrow, expressed by phrases that are in a drastic and immense sigh; tense, pained and elongated before an overwhelmed release where an incredible concentration and last reserve of energy is required to bear it. The work harks back to Schubert and his Winterreise, but now as if it had started after its end, comparable to its aftermath in an extended slow death (until the frantic and ferocious finale), almost every phrase approaching the metaphysical from a profound inwardness and encroaching, unbearable and brooding darkness (the vocalizations as if he is rising out of his body or reaching ever inward for a reason to go on).

Ironically, I'm starting to like Lorca more now. It's also a bit more memorable. But both have turned into some of my favorite albums as well 😉

And (as I'm writing) I'm listening to the highest ranked album here (AW), omg it's amayyyyziing

I consider it a very good quality (of any serious music listener trying to delve deeper into these masterpieces) that you seem persistent and keep returning to albums such as Lorca (and probably many others) to really see if you can find out what's extraordinary about them. It seems only a certain percentage are willing to (truly) take that "leap of faith" (which at first it seems like...) but over the years it seems pretty much 1 for 1 that does this (and sticks with it) sooner or later ends up being blown away more and more as their experience and assimilation of these works increases (myself included!).

I always have the impression that on first listen, I don't have to click with it. But there has to be some sort of mysterious charm or memorable to it that makes me want to come back to it. And that was written all over all of the Tim albums I've heard. When I first heard Lorca, I was transformed to another dimension. With Starsailor, I simply thought it was an all-round classic that was a great blend of top-tier ballads and tracks bloaded with artistic freedom 🫠 🕺 . Happy Sad is my most played one - and is the album pick for my chart.
When I escape this Matrix of a planet, I'm taking all three albums with me 8)

Buckley's three greatest masterpieces will probably get you there faster than any pill 😎

Hmmmm - thank you - totally seems like an artist I should know but I dont think Ive heard anything by him. Will check it out!

I only discovered him by accident as he was the opening act when I went to see Buddy Guy in a tiny club in East Boston (before his resurgence). Campbell was completely unknown to me and proved to be a wonderful surprise. The album as a whole has a decent mix of tempos and acoustic vs. electric, but a couple of the slower pieces are real treats.

Well thanks for the recommendations. That's mainly what I came/come for. I'm gonna hear them when it's time to. I'm already going to listen to Down Colorfull Hill, Illinois, On Avery Island, and Picaresque. I'll have to revisit Blonde On Blonde, On The Beach, Tonight's The Night, Jagged Little Pill, and Mount Eerie as well.

Certainly has echoes of 2 you mention: early Dylan crossed with Cohen.

Utterly simple, but subtle, preciously beautiful and quite moving, even devastating. A real time stopper.

Finally got around to listening to Our Mother the Mountain. Seriously, thank you. I listened to the eponymous album of Townes Van Zandt and didn't see much of a connection and his voice lacked a quality I look for in singer/songwriter types. This album however seems much more musically connected to what I like, even if I'd still put many Johnny Cash or Dylan or Donovan records above this record (after a first listen), it still is solid. I'd start it at an 80 to 85 for sure (3.5 to a 4). 3 is where things start to drop off for me as a reference. Willie Nelson took me a bit to get into and I could see that being similar for this duder.

Right on, maybe it will improve for you after approx 3-5 listens
