You've put your list on a public forum, you should expect criticisms. I don't think there's any such thing as objective best, but it's obvious why there are so many albums from North America and the United Kingdom. People can only judge what they have heard. And it goes without saying that most people on the site are from North America or Europe. If people in China made a list of best albums it would probably be Asian albums that they are familiar with.

It's not necessarily about how GOOD the music is, per se. It just hasn't reached enough people to have as profound of an impact as albums produced in the US and UK.

Fei Xiang's A Voice on the Ocean has sold over 20,000,000 copies. The album was huuuuge in China (a country that makes up roughly 20% of the world's population), and I think it's hard to argue that the album didn't have an impact. I suspect that nearly every pop singer in China would acknowledge Fei Xiang as an influence on their music. Now, you won't have (m)any American or European artists dropping his name, but surely he gets some consideration for this list?

I wouldn't be so quick to underestimate the impact of non-Euro/American artists like Salif Keita, Youssou N'Dour, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Nadeem–Shravan, Daler Mehndi, Pedro Infante, Jacky Cheung, et al.

By the way, what albums would be #s 167, 168, and 169?

Love that this was mentioned, because I love this discussion. Art is of course totally subjective, which is the only reason why someone like 6ix 9ine gets anyone to attend his shows and listen to his music. The fun part is trying to pretend like we can make it objective. If it were totally objective, what would be the fun in arguing?

Are native Africans and Asians incapable of producing an album as good as the 200 you've listed?

You've put your list on a public forum, you should expect criticisms. You can dismiss it as nonconstructive and assert yourself with dictionary definitions, but if a criticism says you're missing many types of music, you can probably assume they think you would be better off including more types of music.

Ok, first and foremost, I'm happy to accept any criticism that is coming from a place of trying to improve my list and teach me something, not from a place of pretentiousness. I don't really appreciate being talked down to, and that's that.
The objective greatest albums come from NA and UK for the most part because these albums/locations are the ones that have had the most profound effect on universal popular culture, and are thus more likely to be influential than those produced elsewhere. Not to take anything away from albums produced elsewhere; I love myself some Youssou N'Dour just as much as the next guy who has been lucky enough to listen to his beautiful music. It's not necessarily about how GOOD the music is, per se. It just hasn't reached enough people to have as profound of an impact as albums produced in the US and UK.
Your respectful response and defense of the other dude is impressive and much appreciated. Good day to you, and thank you for your CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.

my skills at getting words into the dictionary for the purpose of non-essential use in an insult are pretty great and deserve applause, but still, is the explanation for arcade fire's status really just that they have the most critical acclaim and are one of the most popular bands active today? even though those claims can most politely be described as highly dubious? is there really nothing you have to say about the music?

And please bear in mind that this site is itself a greatest albums objective list (because it's a list and it's from many charts), and moreover, in the overall chart, you can include or not the recognized charts from various magazines. So you can select only BEA users charts, only magazines charts, or both (the default overall chart). Interesting, isn't it ?

Honestly, you can be as skeptical as you would like to be. I can't stop you. But I also couldn't really care less ðŸ'

Quote:

also why on earth would Arcade Fire get the consideration mentioned above, that sounds insane and entirely unjustified

Arcade Fire is arguably the most critically acclaimed band of the 21st century, as well as being one of the most popular active bands in the world. I personally don't connect much with any of their albums besides Funeral, but that takes nothing away from their monumental impact on alt-rock in this century.
