Yeah, this.

You can be happy and make good art, but it's probably not best for artists to only rely on one set of emotions (for their sake, not ours).

yeah like the weird quasi-pedestal we collectively put suffering artists atop is only ever to the detriment of those suffering artists we claim to love and support (but let's be honest, everyone who romanticizes, say, Cobain's experience for example is more just infatuated with the idea of Kurt Cobain than anything else. It's really quite bizarre and honestly kinda sickening when you get right down to it)

while there is likely a certain truth to the idea that experiencing a broader range of emotions can move one to create better or deeper art (whatever that means), I think there's a certain cultural romanticizing that society has towards the idea of the "depressed artistic genius" that really skews our collective understanding of just how depression does or does not influence the creative process. At least in my personal experience, most of the depressed artists I know do most of their art -even art relating to that depression- during whatever moments they can find away from that depression however briefly.

I honestly kind of hate the common assertion that happiness kills artistic inspiration because in addition to it being a nonsensically vague platitude, it feeds some truly toxic widely held beliefs regarding anti-medication fearmongering and other such bullshit.

I get where you're coming from. Because writing can be a catharsis, you wouldn't want to purge happiness, and so not write. But the same is true of depression, at least for me. If I'm in a bad mood, the last thing I want to do is write. However, you absolutely should. If it's important to you, write everyday, even for ten minutes. Don't worry if its bad. Write anyway.

Another word on inspiration - there's a quote that I can't remember which basically says that there are stories all around us, and a good writer has his eyes open to them. This shows you don't have to write about yourself, you don't even have to write about something that comes from an emotional place - it could entirely cerebral. You can even write about other people. Don't wait for inspiration to come, start writing and you will become inspired.

Of course, this applies to other artistic mediums as well.

Just a suggestion, try out some "wacky tabacco" and that may initiate some positive creativity.

Well when I was in my "dark period" I would just scribble a whole bunch (pages) of notes down at once however I felt like (modern composition), and then recreate what I was thinking when I made the notes over a span of months, but I can't do that anymore.
