on the subject of classical music requiring more of a conscious effort in order to appreciate it, i would completely agree, but add that once it's under your belt so to speak, it can be extremely rewarding.. exactly the same mechanism employed when listening to 'challenging' prog rock albums for example

I used to dabble in "classical music". I seem to be drawn to tone-poems, symphonic poems, they call them. Beethoven's 6th, Holst's The Planets, Sibelius #2, Dvorak's New World Symphony. A few others but along those veins. Some of this ilk really rock so I relate to them. So many are so impressive but like someone said previously, they require more effort to listen to and I'm guilty of getting bored quickly so I don't dabble anymore. That's my 2 cents, can I get change back?

I have the greatest difficulties listening to classical music, I generally find it demands too much attention from me, and for too long. However, for a short format-educated popster like me, I find Satie is really easy and enjoyable to listen to - easy but not simplistic. I would suggest starting by him to anyone who, like me, has only been listening to shorter tunes and would like to have a go at something else.

i'm no expert on classical, though i've learnt a few 'masterpieces' on the piano.. most of which washed over me

debussy, on the other hand, is something different altogether.. a bit of a maverick in the sense that he disregarded traditional concepts of harmonics, which led to some really evocative, dreamlike and even disconcerting compositions

this is a beautiful orchestral arrangment for clair de lune:

brilliantly played piano solo of clair de lune:
..and one of his best known orchestral works, prelude to the afternoon of a faun (apparently michael jacksons favourite piece of music!)
Link
Wagner is amazing. a bit overwhelming at times! definitely exhilarating. I think I would include him in my top all time composers along with the big 3 (Mozart, Beethoven, Bach). My favourite from him is Parsifal.

Oh and as for Mozart, who is probably my favourite (or is Beethoven? lol) I would have to go with Symphony 41 for the win! One of the absolute peaks of music. 40 & 39 are great as well, clarinet and orchestra concerto, a bunch of other concertos. I could listen to him endlessly. That's one thing about Classical I find, the music is more consistently great than with say Rock music.

I'm starting to get into Classical proper and I have to say my favourite composer is definitely Bach. Beethoven and Mozart are excellent as well. Here's my current favourites:

Bach: Cello Suites, Goldberg Variations, Toccata & Fugue, Cantata 147, Mass in B Minor, French Suities, Magnificat - honestly I don't get all the fuss over St. Matthews Passion or St. John for that matter. Everyone seems to adore those..

Beethoven: Symphony 9, 7 & 5, Grosse Fugue strings, and pretty much any piano sonata (21 especially).

Id suggest, a year later, "ave maria" and "night on bald mountain" both on the fantasia soundtrack. In fact id say that soundtrack is the quintessential classical collection.

                          Just that part.

The problem with classical music vs. popular music is that the second list I gave only gives the composer and selection, not the performer or conductor. In popular music we usually list the performer and song title. For example, in popular music you might see Kinks: You Really Got Me (You Really Got Me) or Van Halen: You Really Got Me (Van Halen), often without the parenthetical album shown. But you would probably not see it listed in the classical music format-Davies, R: You Really Got Me (The Kinks). The performer and performance are as important as the composer in both genres but we tend not to be as formal or complete with popular music.

I love the idea, but I confess I'm not that well versed in Classical yet. I've only heard about 10 classical 'masterpieces'. When you say Ode to Joy, do you mean Beethoven's 9th or just that part?

If you have the time and patience, go to a concert; it's quite nice. if you can't stand being quiet, listen at home, but you should at least try it.

But, I admit to ignorance of actual albums. I'd look for Boston Pops as performers for Williams (with him conducting, naturally), but no idea what orchestras would be good for the others.

I would just focus on Composer names and (maybe) instrumentation if I was going to go exploring the vast amounts of "Classical" Genre music for the first time (again). And then, after finding some things I liked, I would trace that composers "influence" genealogy. For example if you like Beethoven, try listening to Brahms and Debussy, and also Mozart and Haydn.

I also would recommend going to concerts over recordings except for that if you get tired of a piece of music in a recording you can pause the track or skip it, whereas when it's live I usually just fall asleep.

If you want more modern music in the classical genre, I've always been partial to the rather well-known compositions of John Williams.

In the true classics, you might find a rendition of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, which is another standard. A couple other common favorites are Swan Lake and The Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky.

But, I admit to ignorance of actual albums. I'd look for Boston Pops as performers for Williams (with him conducting, naturally), but no idea what orchestras would be good for the others.

If I had to give all my favourites I did not know what to choice (I could also make a top 40 on classical pieces), but names I didn't noticed are Eric Satie and Scott Joplin (more ragtime but his classical influenced stuff is great).
My personal favourite is Mozart. It's like someone is saying that life is great the whole time.
And my favourite planet is Earth.

John Cage
George Crumb--Particularly "Quartet for the End of Time"
Olivier Messiaen

and, I've never met anybody who didn't like Claude Debussy
