Regarding the Bahamas, I used to feel bad for hurricane victims but now that I'm one myself those feelings are amplified and even though it's gonna miss me it's still really depressing seeing what they're going through.

Right now they're predicting that there's a 50% chance of it not making landfall in Florida at all. Definitely trending eastward tonight.

Wishing you all the best Badseed. Hoping for everyone's sake the storm isn't as bad as anticipated. Most of my family has lived in Florida at some point or another, and I'm accustomed to the hurricane stories... odd sense of community to it all, but obviously the brunt of it is brutal.

Prep the best you can, and keep up with updates, but don't spend too much time worrying (doesn't help no matter what happens). Couple deep breaths here and there.

Hoping all the best.

badseed, you should be safe in Panama City. I mean, you'll still get a lot of rain and wind, but nothing compared to Michael. Dorian is forecasted to track north as it approaches FL. The east coast will get hit hard. But afterward, if it tracks north, the center of the storm will miss Panama City. But if it breaks from its projected path and does hit Panama City, it will be significantly weaker by the time it gets there. Either way, this isn't gonna be another Michael for you.

But definitely stay alert and stay safe. And if you feel compelled to evacuate, just do it. Better to be safe. Hoping for the best for you, your family, and PurpleHazel's brother.
100% understandable. The European model shows Dorian going up the east coast of Florida at the moment -- I don't know shit more than anyone else, and the forecasts can easily change -- but you might be in one of the best locations in Florida right now. Maybe better there than Tampa, though I'd much rather be on the west coast than east. Sucks they're already out of water where you are.
Well here we are less than a year later, and it looks like another big hurricane is gonna rock Florida. I'm expecting it to weaken once it makes landfall on the east coast, so perhaps my area won't be hit as hard. Still I worry. Driving north after last year, there were still snapped trees and damaged buildings in south Alabama, so I'm not convinced it's gonna be weakened enough to just pass over. I still don't have a garage door, and where my ceiling used to be in the garage and kitchen is just replaced with a flimsy layer of taped up plastic for now. There's still a massive pile of roof shingles and plywood laying in my driveway that I'm expecting to blow all over the place. On top of all that, my kids went back to live with their mother in Tampa last month. She seems to think she's safe. I don't know. Maybe its just the PTSD from last year but I feel so weak, helpess, and scared right now. Gas stations are lined up to the roads and bottled water is already sold out everywhere. This shit sucks.
Holy cow. That looked intense. Tornados are scary to me because there's no way of knowing it's coming in advance, and fuck blowing your roof off if it's not strong enough, tornados will split your shit right down the middle. Sucks for those people. After being through a natural disaster I feel more affected when it happens to others because I know how real it is. Wishing you and your area the best.

Weather really freaks me out lately. I think I have PTSD. Had a few rainy and windy nights a couple months back when half the roof was still tarped off and almost had a nervous breakdown trying to keep the plywood that i have leaning where the garage door should be from falling. Hurricane season is right around the corner already and my house still isn't fully repaired. Roofers started and disappeared months ago. Lots of BS, still no air conditioning and it's getting hot, had humidifiers running 24 hours a day throughout the house a couple eeeks ago and would wake up to read 108 degrees on the thermostat. I kept my door shut with the window open and fans so it was bearable in my room from like midnight to 8 AM - now that we're hitting summer I'm still waking up to 85-90. Buying a window unit for my room in a couple days though. I literally sit outside in the shade all day, go to work in the afternoon (which feels like vacation) then come back and sit outside until I'm ready for bed and I take numerous cold showers a day. But yeah I'm doing good. Haha.

The Kansas City Metro area can experience extremely severe weather, but a tornado is a rare occurrence. There have been a couple small tornadoes touch down in my lifetime within the metro area, but they caused minimal damage.

2011 was a high year for weak tornadoes, but the past years have seen a decline. I have never personally seen a tornado on the ground in my life, and I've lived here for 23 years.

BTW if you're really serious about moving, then consider moving to the Kansas City area. We are growing rapidly, and all the cheap housing we have is being bought by other people moving here. I don't know what your line of work is, but I'm sure there is something in the area that may be applicable.

Thanks again everyone. It's rough, but I'm a tough dude. I've gotten to the point in life not everyone reaches where the sadness and suffering of others far outweighs that of mine. Not sure what direction I'm about to go in life but I feel like big changes are coming. I can't save the world but I can and will make sure that my kids don't have to sit sandwiched between two mattresses fearing for their lives ever again.
