Though I reached out to two for the noir poll, it doesn't mean that this isn't still a good idea. If we do go ahead with the game, I'm down to host some of them.

badseed wrote:

Of course it could be done elsewhere, but nowhere else is BEA!

Agree! I wasn't endorsing the idea of going elsewhere, just answering StreetSpirit's question about movie forums. If we moved it to a movie forum, than it wouldn't be a BEA poll any more, it would be that forum's poll, and the few of us who went over there would be noob interlopers.

Quote:

And personally I'm not a fan of entering someone else's terrain and trying to run things. Imagine if some noob with a basic top 40 signs up and decides to immediately host a "best of the year" game in our forums. I don't think everyone would be happy about it.

Yeah, this what I was getting at with Blu-ray.com, but you expressed it much more vividly.

Haven't seen a post from hereforashortime (living up to his name I guess, haha) in a while. Same with Gowi, AwaitingAndrew, and Mercury. Nutso left BEA.

I pmed Mercury and Gowi about the film noir poll. Mercury replied with a nice message saying he'd take a look and see if he could come up with a list satisfactory to him. Didn't hear back from Gowi. Though he popped in briefly during that 2017 album tournament after someone gave him a head's up about it, I get the sense he's now really moved on.
I've been active in CriterionForum and the Blu-ray.com forums. CriterionForum's out. The mods and the most active members decide which polls (they call them lists) the forum holds and it's all scheduled in advance. Bluray.com has had some informal poll-type threads, but nothing as formal as BEA's. Theoretically we could probably post a poll there, but I think we'd have to start with something less ambitious, like a genre list. IMDb shut down their forums in 2017 -- a controversial move (I never posted there). Letterboxd doesn't have a forum.

I stumbled across this list, but it's a little too overwhelming for me to dig into right away:

https://filmboards.com/board/p/8664/

Yeah I've never found a site quite like BEA, but for movies. If I had, I would've joined it. I wish Letterboxd had a forum feature, but that'll probably never happen because it's more like a social media platform.

badseed wrote:

Of course it could be done elsewhere, but nowhere else is BEA!

For real though this is the only forum I participate in. Part of a couple movie-related Facebook groups but that's about it. And personally I'm not a fan of entering someone else's terrain and trying to run things. Imagine if some noob with a basic top 40 signs up and decides to immediately host a "best of the year" game in our forums. I don't think everyone would be happy about it.

But yeah, seems there are a lot of regular users who either aren't posting at all anymore (I wouldn't know as I'm not active enough) or have lost interest in our movie stuff, because things have died down considerably for the last couple polls and there are lots of respected names who used to participate that have been absent from them. It's definitely something I'd like to see more than 6 or 8 people take part in. Maybe if I sent out a mass PM of a copy of the first post some ghosts could pop back up with some nominations.

It'd be nice to see someone new take an interest.

It'd be all different years, at least 1939-2010. Agree that we shouldn't do any year that already had a Best Of [Year] poll, at least ones that members still active in film polls have participated in.

As for playing this game for older years like 1969, it sounds fun I don't know how much user participation we would get since this is a music site. Isn't there similar site to BEA, but for movies? I think the idea would get more participants there.

Pan's Labyrinth
Children Of Men
Babel
Letters From Iwo Jima
Probably the categories other than picture, the acting categories, director and screenplay should be optional, to encourage participation (I myself don't care about producer if they didn't have significant creative input. Also, don't think producers always played a big role in classic foreign films).

How elaborate a nomination process you have in mind? Perhaps not too elaborate for participation reasons? Also there are at least 80 years to cover!

A DVD forum I'm a member of did alternate Oscars threads. It wasn't an actual poll; the only reason I bring it up is that just the nominated films were eligible -- it was only the winner that was often alternate -- and that didn't interest me that much. I like this idea much better. The Best Picture category would be like doing short yearly charts and polls for movies, and since I couldn't come up with much more than 10 for many years anyway, this would be the best way for me (and presumably some others) to make yearly "lists."

Producer = Best Picture.  🤡
Has the BEMAs acronym (best ever movie awards) been used before? I know BEAMA has. Think about it. We start with any random year, 1969 for example. We start off with an elaborate nomination process, which brings us to 5 nominees for each category (maybe 10 for Best Picture) that we all have to choose from. Probably wouldn't do every category; mainly just producing, directing, writing and acting. Maybe cinematography and editing. Hell I'm down to go deeper if y'all are. Sounds fun, and easier than compiling lists. I'm just not sure there's enough activity to prevent numerous low-number ties (in which case we could always have run-off votes).

Yeah, there's lots of other good stuff. I basically swapped mine out with movies that were actually nominated that year because it seems a large portion of foreign films from the old days up to today don't make it to America and earn Oscar consideration until a year or more later than their IMDb/Wikipedia year denotes.

With that said of Army of Shadows was eligible, I agree with PurpleHazel's picks.

But we're getting really into a delusional fantasy if we think there would ever be that many foreign language films nominated for BP.

The only reason I didn't include Colour of Pomegranate was the impossibility of it ever being nominated, but since that's true for other films I included, I'll swap Z out with it.
It's available from Criterion on DVD. Don't know if that's a viable option for you.

The Cremator was one of the next films I wanted to get to when the Criterion channel was still on Hulu. Don't think it was on Filmstruck initially, but they might've added it later. Hopefully it'll be on the new service.

As far as '69 goes, Hollis Frampton's Lemon should have won Best Picture with ease, but I fear it wasn't up for consideration.

Looking back, my knowledge of the year is pretty slim, but it def had some gems. This is all I've seen:

Kes (Loach)
Diaries, Notes, and Sketches (Mekas)
The Color of Pomegranates (Parajanov)
Le Grand Amour (Etaix)
The Cremator (Herz)
Ma Nuit Chez Maud (Rohmer)
Funeral Parade Of Roses (Matsumoto)
Z (Gavras)
The Blues Accordin’ to Lightnin’ Hopkins (Blank)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Roy Hill)
L'Armée Des Ombres (Melville)
Take The Money And Run (Allen
Salesman (The Maysles & Zwerin)

And a portion of The Wild Bunch, but I still haven't finished it. I've been looking for Shinoda's Double Suicide for a while without luck, but I hope to get around to that eventually. Same with Jires's The Joke.

Might also give Z another watch sometime soon... I don't feel I was enamoured with it as others.

Regarding Shelley Duvall, she created her character in 3 Women entirely by herself. It's such a precise characterization and she really disappears into the role. Maybe I should've moved her performance 10 ranks down my list or something, but I do think it's worthy of being in the top 25-50. An offbeat choice for sure, but I think it's good for a list to have some unconventional selections on it. She won Best Actress at Cannes that year.

For Best Picture nominees of 1969, I'd go with:

The Wild Bunch
Midnight Cowboy
Army of Shadows
My Night at Maude's
Z

Army of Shadows allegedly didn't play in the U.S. till 2006, though I've found such claims for other films not always to be 100% correct.

Runners-up:
Kes
The Colour of Pomegranate
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

🤔

Suppose that was an update?

Yeah, that's just too high. Y'know. It's a good performance, but...

Adjani in the top 10 is dope, and Stanwyck in the top 15 is really unexpected (not against it by any means). Suppose I should get around to seeing The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Midnight Cowboy...

You should absolutely see The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Maggie Smith's acting in it is bravura. It is breathtaking. Virtually everyone who's ever seen it would tell you.

And Midnight Cowboy. Its funny looking back, if you didn't know any better, you'd think Voight was a bright up and comer while Hoffman comes across as the most grizzled veteran of the screen.

Oh so I watched 3 Women last night because of Duvall's unexpected high placement. Not a first time watch or anything; it's one of my favorite Altman films. I just needed a fresh view. Shelley is fine, probably better than she's ever been and it's one of the best Altman-directed performances, but I agree with Hayden that it's a bit overrated on here.

I guess both Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman weret kind of newcomers then. Midnight Cowboy was probably only their second or third movie or something like that. I never really thought about if 1969 was a good movie year or not, but looking at the Oscar movies you would think that it was. Midnight Cowboy, They Shoot Horses Don't They, Miss Jean Brodie. But it really wasn't a good year at all. There wasn't even enough good movies to fill out the Oscar categories. And they are very lenient to say the least. Ha ha

Yeah they were both pretty new. But Hoffman seems as if he's so much older, and is SO good for a young actor during that time period. If I wasn't familiar with his career I'd think he was an old pro.

Regarding the Oscars, the entirety of the 60s was a hot mess. Too many musicals, too many old fashioned performances when it's clear that Hollywood was progressing. Look no further than Hoffman losing the Oscar to John Wayne in a mostly typical John Wayne performance. I haven't kept up with history in a long time (I was a borderline expert as a teenager who could school anyone in an Oscar trivia contest) but yeah, let's look back at '69.

Best Picture Nominees: Midnight Cowboy, Anne of the Thousand Days, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Hello Dolly, Z.

Ick. Midnight Cowboy and Z are good. The rest, meh. I know Butch and Sundance is pretty popular but swap it for The Wild Bunch. Get rid of the sentimental Dolly in place of the counterculture masterpiece Easy Rider, and 1000 days seems like forever so I only need My Night at Maud's. There's what the real 5 nominees should have been. '69 was a good year. The Academy has just always been weird and the late 60s were among their weirdest.
Sometimes some of my favorite performances are really just the ones I like the most. Someone like Shelley Duvall. You don't have to be a great actor to do something spectacular in a movie. A lot of the performances that I think are the best are sometimes by actors who arent particularly great actors. Even on my list I had people like Eric Roberts and Brad Davis who were just unexperienced actors, but their performances were unbelievably effective. Even more so than ones done by people who are considered great actors. That happens sometimes. I think maybe it's because since they're inexperienced they haven't become self-conscious yet, and are willing to do just anyrything. I think maybe the directors tell them to just go all out and go for it, just go nuts. And sometimes it just works out well. Probably usually it doesn't but sometimes it does. But when actors become well-known they become very self-conscious and they're concerned with how theyre thought of by other people. And they're only willing to do certain things. That's why most actors just become caricatures of themselves after a while and just keep doing the same thing over and over and over in movies.
