Time is an interesting thing and I'll just leave it at that. Things age differently.

Also then there's the group that's like yo, that's dad rock and it sucks cuz that.

And then there's the 2012 me, who thought the same thing (music from the 2010s is aimless and boring), and the reality is music is just as good if not better today, if you are willing to wade through 43907634795734805340 pounds of shit.

Really all that's changed is the record company.

Listen, I was raised on the classic rock radio cult just like a lot of kids were, but that's ludicrous. And I actually like In Through The Outdoor more than most people. It's their most fractured album, and even if John Bonham hadn't died in 1980, this very well could have been their last anyway. Page and Bonham were blitzed 24/7 and John Paul Jones and Plant were barely keeping things together. This is JPJ's album, and, cheesy keyboards aside, he does a decent job.

I'd suggest this album that has an old feel, but also is undeniably made in this decade.

Yeah, if In Through The Out Door is the baseline and the comparison is to Flotsam, I'm generally going with Flotsam.

Personally, I think All of My Love is borderline intolerable and truth be told, Fool in the Rain is no picnic either, at least relative to what Zep was capable of. So Flotsam it is!

Overall, I would be inclined to say that music probably was better in the past... but which music? And which Past?

I think Rock had a golden age in the late 60s to mid 70s time frame... but jazz had its golden age in the late 50s to mid 60s. And Classical? Try a couple hundred years ago!

But even that is a too simplistic view. As Tilly noted, there is great music coming out every year. The difference as I see it as back in the day, the great music was more concentrated. But today, there is just soooo much music out there, that finding the "good stuff" can be a bit of a challenge. The explosion of genres, and the melding and blending of genres has led to so many permutations of music that it's all just too much for one person to try to take it all in. So sure, if I limit myself to rock and I know there's not another LZIV coming out this year, it's easy to say music today isn't as good.

To be honest, the last great revelation/totally mind blowing album I can recall was DT's Images and Words in '92. But after having lived through the 80s, I was sure I would never have that experience again. Now I know better, even though it's been a while... and there have been many, many next tier excellent experiences.

Yes, and biases are nothing to be ashamed of. But preferring Led Zeppelin to most rock bands (or other artists) working in 2019 does not mean that music is getting worse. It just means you have a preference for certain sounds.

What Skinny said, and also since Led Zeppelin are one of the best rock bands of all time it's hardly strange that you (and me and many other people) prefer it to most of 2019 music. I mean IV is still number 1 on my chart, so is it strange that I prefer it to all of today's music? And I do listen to many new bands/albums and enjoy a lot of them.

If this was released in 1979, it would have fried all our heads. Trust me. Certainly more so than In Through The Outdoor which was considered a disappointment by many including myself.

Dopethrone fried all of our heads anyways. Just a couple of decades later.

And of course that's just one example among many. There is killer, mind-blowing music each & every year.

Sometimes I just feel the opposite.
Some of the old bands/artists (Marianne Faithfull, The Dream Syndicate, The Bevis Frond, Grant Lee Phillips) have in my opinion released their best work in these last few years and nobody seems to agree because they have canonized the old stuff and think the new stuff is out-of-date (regressive attempt etc).
I try to look at everything with a fresh view (although I'm of course biased by the music I enjoyed when I was younger, a reason why I don't like hiphop etc) and I agree with Carpents that there's never been a period with so many great albums than in this last half of the 2010's and that in my opinion can stand the test of time and indeed the difficult thing is to find the good stuff amongst all those albums being released every week.

Wait, wait, wait.... so, I wrote “blow people’s minds”, and as I look back, my phone appears to have auto-corrected the word “minds” to “kids”. Which is quite the hilarious auto-correct. Whether or not you like Led Zeppelin, I think we can all agree, that shits funny right there.

Yeah I didn't even know Zeppelin put out an album in 1979, if it were just found out today there would be numerous "Thumbs up if you're listening in..."-crowd-based jerk-off discussions praising the album to the heavens and then everybody would forget it by the end of 2019.

You can argue anything, it doesn't mean it's right. Music had become stale by 1979, and thank God (and the Pixies lol) we broke out of it.

There is more great music being made today than ever before in human history. That's part of the current struggle, finding those greats among all the rest.

If it came out tomorrow, people would probably call it a regressive attempt to cash in on a long-irrelevant genre or something along those lines. If it was released under a name other than Led Zeppelin, potentially nobody would talk about it at all. It might be a hit with the baby boomer demographic though, and the tour could make for effective nostalgia therapy in retirement homes.

And with those 3 songs I named, add “in the evening” which is also a great song. And to note, the rest of the album is terrible. And the argument is not even that it’s a great album, or even a great Led Zeppelin album. Simply that this album with 4 real good songs is better than any rock album for the past few years.
