I saw them at an ATP event last new years eve in London supported by the Pop Group. Judging from that performance, splitting up was the right move. Also Thurston Moore played solo here too recently, so the signs of a split were on the cards. This news doesn't come as a surprise to me.

I'm more sad for their daughter. Growing up with divorce sucks. I speak from experience. I'm not sure this necessarily means the end of Sonic Youth. It could actually be possible that they might actually keep the band going. We'll have to wait and see. If they do break up though, it's important to keep in mind that they've had a long career, so it wouldn't be that tragic. They've been around almost as long as R.E.M. who just called it quits and most of their 80's indie rock peers called it quits a long time ago. Maybe it's time.

Hard to understand why two people who have been together for around 30 years and married for a good part of that and had a lot of success together suddenly decide to split, but oh well.
