Purple - I was just being sarcastic with the "take my word for it" part. Didn't mean anything by it. Don't look deep into it.

Chief - your list was just fine, and I like the Henson-Oz pick. It's a quirky choice and like I said not something post-pubescent badseed is too familiar with but I loved their work as a kid and still greatly appreciate their contributions to family entertainment.

Haha, sorry for not having a response. I put the list together pretty haphazardly, but that final list is pretty decent.

I based my picks more on people that I think of together rather than any merit of the movies they made, which is why I put Henson and Oz.

If you're saying Bergman needs more than the Coens, I agree. Two of the three Coen teams were for only supporting actors. Since it was a 50-item list, I excluded teams with actors who only had supporting roles, though if I were making a longer list, I would have (and came close to doing it).

Do you mean "take my word for it" because you think I haven't seen enough Bergman -- I've seen 15 films -- or another reason?

Bergman's the only director on there three times, right? Don't get greedy. 😉

I've seen a few Hammer films, hope to check out a few more for the poll.

Quote:

The Devil Rides Out is also one hell of a banger.

I want to see this, but it was never released on DVD in the U.S., correct?

Unless my research did me wrong (I havent seen any of these films since I was like 5) Henson did direct Oz in at least 3 features (or at least directed his voice over some puppets). Otherwise they would have been disqualified.

The Coens and Bergman were tied. Bergman needs more. Take my word for it.

I think you're right about Devil Rides Out. I caught it on TCM at least twice way back in the day. A region free Bluray/DVD player doesnt cost as much as they used to. I'd recommend getting one. Makes it a lot easier to see movies you generally wouldn't have another way to in the US.

Think Tim Burton's somewhat overrated. His animation-art design background has only carried him so far -- the writing in his movies is subpar a majority of the time. That said, Ed Wood and The Nightmare Before Christmas are very good to excellent and a few others are worthwhile.

I used to to admire Johnny Depp, particularly how he used his stardom to work with the best directors -- you see that more often with stars nowadays. But I hated his winking, ironic performance in Public Enemies, which felt lazy and clashed with Michael Mann's sincere approach to the material. He hasn't even been in anything since I wanted to see.

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp barely making the list at #49. What's up with that? Granted they're both on a losing streak, but come on. They used to be awesome, and should be higher imo.

To be honest they are surprisingly low. This is coming from someone who didn't list them; they're just a popular duo in comparison to a good portion of the list. Honestly, they don't do much for me. I've always found both of them, both together and separate, very hit or miss. I find myself caring less and less about Burton with age, and I can't remember the last time Depp impressed me, so perhaps you're right and their "losing streak" has put a stink on their name that they don't deserve. But for me personally, there's like 3 Burton movies I have any desire to watch again ever honestly and only one of them has Depp (Ed Wood). But knowing me, my stance on that will change at some point and I'll be all about them.

The part I object to is that Burton-Helena Bonham Carter at #46 beat out Burton-Depp. That's basically saying Big Fish > Ed Wood-Edward Scissorhands (hmmm... wonder if Scissorhands was named after Ed Wood!).
Didn't help Ramsay's output rate that she left Jane Got a Gun.
But also check out Captain Blood, Dodge City, and The Sea Hawk.

Flynn is a legit choice for the list. A lot of actor-director teams deserve credit and I'm not knocking de Havilland and Frost, but I just didn't see them making the list. Now if Michael Curtiz had directed The Heiress, that'd be a whole other story. 😁
I've seen Captain Blood, but not a third.

I just noticed something else surprising. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp barely making the list at #49. What's up with that? Granted they're both on a losing streak, but come on. They used to be awesome, and should be higher imo.
Katheryn Bigelow is a good example of the former -- she was a successful director in the early 90s and hot since The Hurt Locker, but she only directed two movies between Strange Days (1995) and Hurt Locker in 2008. Agnes Varga is one of the greatest female directors, but she made a lot of documentaries and went long periods without doing fiction films. One example I can think of is Kelly Reichardt-Michelle Williams (haven't seen Meek's Cutoff, so I couldn't vote for them). Like StreetSpirit said, things are changing and there will be more female director collaborations.

Good points. Lynne Ramsay and Sofia Coppola are others whose films are few and far between. I can't think of any female directors whose output is among the top, in terms of number/quality of films, and critical/popular recognition. I guess we're still waiting for that someone to claim it. Maybe Patty Jenkins in the next 5-10 years depending how things turn out? However, 14 years passed between Monster and Wonder Woman so who knows. But again I think we'll get there soon. Personally I would like it if Ramsay released films more than once every 5 years.

Some more thoughts...

Jim Henson and Frank Oz is such an oddball choice.

I'd swap Buscemi and Goodman around on the Coen hierarchy.

Needs more Bergman TBH.

You guys should really check out some Hammer horror films for the horror poll. For those not familiar, Hammer is/was a British studio that is most known for re-envisioning many of the classic horror tales in the 50s through the 70s, most of which were previously shot by Universal in the 30s. I had Terence Fisher with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing high on my list but I'm gonna safely assume not everyone has seen much there. You (almost) can't go wrong with any of their Dracula or Frankenstein films. The Devil Rides Out is also one hell of a banger.

Good list! Thanks badseed for all the work. This was a great concept for a poll and a stimulating one. In effect, each 50-team list is like voting for at least 150 films.

Guess Shaun of the Dead's popularity cannot be underestimated.

Hayden wrote:

Interesting that there's no female directors... I know there's less female directors, but now that I realize it, are there any directing/acting duos with female directors at all?

This poll made me more aware that many directors like working with the same stars or stock companies of supporting actors, while many others, for whatever reason, choose to or are obligated to work with different casts almost every time out. Kubrick's an example of someone who didn't work with the same actors again much -- the fact that he usually went a long time between films and had his pick of the biggest stars most of his career chiefly explains it.

Since there are so far fewer female directors and it's generally harder for them to get films made, it's probably harder for them to make films close enough together and have the control to hire the casts they want. There are very few female directors on the Wikipedia page. We can't fault ourselves for being exclusive when there were so few to begin with. But it's okay. There are more opportunities for female directors nowadays and I think we'll get a great female director-actor combo before long. But you know who is feeling excluded? It's a fair list. Don't think there's any oddities anywhere. Don't blame our #1 to be a runaway for a second.

Okay, now some personal thoughts...

Godard & Karina is our perennial surprise this go-round. Just looking at the names in the ten or so spots behind them has me shocked they made the top 10. But in a good way of course.

On paper Wright and Pegg should be more my cup of tea than anyone, and I love them, but I'm baffled they made the upper half. So most of you guys will take Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End over Fruitvale Station, Creed and Black Panther (at least Coogler & Jordan squeezed in - and I'm not saying they should be top 25 either)? Okay. I though Scott Pilgrim vs The World was the EW movie everyone here gets excited about (as do I).

... Honestly that's all I've got. This list looks pretty great all around.

For those curious how close it was, here is my worksheet for the top 50. The first number is the total amount of points earned, and the second number is the amount of lists they appeared on. Forgive misspellings; this was just quickly copied over from my other phone (yes, I used two phones to do this whole thing - while I read the lists off one phone I typed them into another, then typed them back into the other one after adding all the points, just to grab the other one again and copy it in a reader-friendly manner here).
