While I agree in the point of not holding my breath, I'm surprised this is your reasoning 🤔

Apart from maybe Fahey, who's a little more niche, all of those artists are extremely popular and have a notable influence and legacy. Ellington? Who hasn't heard of Duke Ellington? Children have heard of Ellington. He's up there with Goodman, Holiday and Louis Armstrong. Unknowable record sales aside, Nigeria basically stopped when Kuti died, and he had a million+ show up at his funeral. The Pharcyde have a gold record. Gil Scott-Heron was a New York icon... I've seen the words 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' graffitied on more buildings than I can count. I wouldn't be surprised if he even has a few murals there. A musician as prolific as Wes Montgomery in our top 1000 while Pharoah Sanders and Sonny Rollins are up there really isn't much of a stretch (by all means, I think Montgomery's even more well known than those two).

Fahey has a Grammy... Duke Ellington has fourteen... Gil Scott-Heron has a Grammy lifetime achievement award... Ellington/Wes/Sun Ra are in a handful of 'jazz hall of fames'... Fela Kuti is literally the pioneer of afrobeat...

Plus, they're all critically acclaimed, and have records in damn near any record shop I've been to anywhere in the world. I'm not even sure I can say that about Kings of Leon (who, unless you were born sometime in the late 80's to mid 90's, I don't think are necessarily a household name).

I really didn't think I was throwing curveballs here. I was staying so conservative I didn't even bother listing Max Roach and Ravi Shankar.

My point was simply that, in comparison to who's not there, for 1 out of every 250 albums in our top 1000 to be by Kings Of Leon, they aren't forgotten, unappreciated, or underrated. That's all. Bob Marley's crazy popular and basically only has 1.
Zombie is ranked #1079, so very close. Pieces Of A Man and Ellington At Newport are in the top 2000 and have been rising. John Fahey and The Pharcyde also have albums in the top 2000. What makes you so sure?

BEA is not a massive group of people sitting around listening to obscure albums. The more popular things will always be heard more. They will always be on more charts. Best we can do is our own little parts to keep them from total obscurity. Top 2000 is pretty good. I'd be happy with that.

And that makes you sure that an album that has gone from #1276 to #1079 in the last four years will never make the top 1000?

Also, we have different definitions of obscure. I'd say Duke Ellington's name recognition is pretty high.

This is a great album. Sex On Fire was my song back in 2008 or whatever.
It's true they have a lot of good albums. Their debut is very stimulating. But this is the album with the stadium-filler songs, imo.
It's in my top 100 anyway.

I think it's a fairly decent album. But both Youth & Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak are better. Use Somebody is also one of the most generic and overplayed songs of that mainstream rock 2000s stream

Couple good pop songs. Sort of a generic rock aesthetic. 2000s were rife with this kind of thing.

Only by the Night is a good album, but it comes after three even better records, and ends up being the height of their career. Critical acclaim, commercial success, multiple Grammy wins. Even though they've put out perfectly serviceable albums since, It's an interesting fulcrum point.

kings of leon.... they're one of those groups that aren't bad but not particularly memorable. won't change the station over them. they have a few interesting songs, but i'm with hayden. there are much more interesting artists worthy of the top 1000 that i'd rather explore.

This is a personal favorite of mine. Sure, you could easily argue that this album is not sophisticated or groundbreaking.. But if that was the case it wouldn't hold the same place in my collection. The entire album is catchy enough to have a decent amount of radio-play (at least here in Canada), and it is very soothing at times with some beautiful ballads.

This is an album that I can spin from front to back when I have family over and while nobody will likely be blown away or amazed, noone will complain.

Also.. If you've only heard the radio singles, do yourself a favor and spin this in its entirety.

We have four albums by Kings of Leon in our top 1000 and nothing by Fela Kuti, Sun Ra, Gil Scott-Heron, Wes Montgomery, Duke Ellington, John Fahey, or The Pharcyde lololololololol.

That album's ranked very high, at 546.

But yeah, regardless, you're not alone there.

And then I’ll just go ahead and argue with myself. At the end of the album there is a album there is a song called “be somebody”, which I believe was a radio song. Solid melody, but at the end they try to get fun with the timing on drums and guitar, and fail. Actually kinda bad. You straight up can’t do that on a professional album.

They aren’t good, but this is an enjoyable album.

Has anyone here ever argued that ‘Only by the Night’ by Kings of Leon is a really great album?

I hadn’t considered, but my wife was just playing it and I realized that like 7 of the 11 songs are basically unskippable, and the other 4 are pretty solid.

As I listen, this album is just way way better than I had ever considered. Always though Kings of Leon we’re fine-ish.. but, this is doing something.

Anyone else on this? Or am I I. An island here?
