Many consider Led Zep to be metal, and at the time they were. However I am not including anything that is less "metal" than Black Sabbath. That also goes for bands like BOC, Deep Purple, AC/DC, KISS (who sucks anyway), and other 70s acts who got the metal tag during their heyday.

I would:

-Replace The Great Misdirect with Colors and then make sure it's closer to the top 75 rather than number 1(come on, they're a really good band but seriously??) I love love LOVE BtBaM. Saw them live last spring, planning on seeing them again in December.
-Replace Aenima with Lateralus Yeah, I got a lot of flack when I tell people I like Aenima more than Lateralus. Then people FREAK when I tell them I also like 10,000 Days more. Lateralus is just the #3 for me!
-Keep TiA right where it is, because it's a fucking ACHIEVEMENT. Amen. Not enough Cynic lovers on this site...
-Replace Blood Mountain with almost any other Mastodon album For me, it's a coin-toss between Blood Mountain and Leviathan. Haven't heard their new album, though... been meaning to...
-Replace Miss Machine with Calculating Infinity Calculating Infinity is damn fine, but it will always be Miss Machine for me. Have you heard their new cover of Public Enemy's Fight the Power? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpLWHrIuJaI
-Move Slaughter of the Soul higher

I've just considered "drone metal" to be "drone" -- no metal. Theyre heavy, but I just feel wrong calling them metal.

Come to think of it I have heard people call them grunge before. I'd still consider them metal but then again you have to do what feels right to you; lord knows I've not considered some bands metal just because they didn't "feel" metal to me.

Hmm, I've never heard Melvins considered anything but sludge metal...

I've always considered them Sludge/Grunge-core (i think i made that one up)/Stoner rock -- maybe thats just me but it feels wrong to put them in the company of bands like emperor, mayhem, death...

Thanks for the feedback so far! I need it because I have never made a top metal list that felt complete to me. We're well on the way with some great suggestions.

40ftwolf: love most of the recommends...i'm being a bit rigid with the definition of metal, excluding bands like melvins, mr. bungle, kyuss etc. But you are right that Mastodon, Napalm Death, Dopethrone, Rainbow, Cave In need to be considered.
